624 Obl 505 image#505, 5c Rose error, single error in sheet of 100, an amazing used sheet being the bottom right plate no. 7942 pane of 100, the error stamp being in the second row from the top, position 18, methodically cancelled with "Milwaukee, Wis./Sta. B/Oct 24 1917" duplex pmks., fortuitously the 5c error stamp is one of the lighter cancelled stamps, the head being nearly cancel free and showing the 5c denomination clearly, excellent sumptuous rose color, few minor perf. separations and and an unapparent surface thin on the selvage by the right plate number, overall the sheet is well centered and the error stamp is nearly very fine; the famous error of the three incorrect 5c transfers in plate 7942 was discovered quite quickly after the sheets reached the post offices, therefore most were sought out by collectors and were saved as mint stamps, usually in blocks of nine or twelve, only a few were inadvertently or philatelicly used, it is not known whether this sheet, which does not have gum, was used on a parcel or possibly for accounting purposes by the Milwaukee post office, but it is used contemporaneously and there is no evidence of philatelic inspiration, we believe this to be unique as a used sheet; a wonderful exhibition piece.
