1940-1956 LARGE DIE PROOFS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
819 TC 894TC1 image#894TC1, 3c Pony Express, large die trial color proof on India, in dark brown, die sunk on card measuring 161x117mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, bright India paper and strong dark color, card is slightly darkened with age but pleasing, very fine; this is the second example of this color proof that we have seen, the first was offered in our 2006 sale of the W. Curtis Livingston Collection (realizing $1,955.00 including the buyers premium) being originally from the Brooks collection; while Scott lists a die proof of this issue, the color proof is not listed in Scott and may only exist in this color; while there is no engraver's name on this proof, the context of this new group of proofs suggests that this may have been pulled for J.S. Edmondson, the letter engraver and one of the ways that two examples of these rare proofs could come into public hands; (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $1,300.00
Will close during Public Auction
820 P 896P1 image#896P1a, 3c Idaho Statehood, large die proof on India, die sunk on card measuring 138x141mm, bright proof with clear color and impression, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reads "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, light wrinkle at top of the card barely affecting the India, otherwise very fine; this is only the second example that we have seen of this rare proof, the other with a "C" security punch and produced in 1942, two years after issuance and thus on wove paper which was being used in 1942; while Scott lists this die proof on India this is the first example we have encountered in these late die proofs where the two different papers are found on the only recorded two proofs; W.K. Schrage, designer; J.R. Lowe, vignette engraver; control number 644241A (1940). (Image) $800.00

SOLD for $375.00
