909 c C13 image#C13, 65c Graf Zeppelin, tied to multicolor view card to Germany by "New York, N.Y./ Varick St. Sta./Jun 5, 1930", by this date the "Graf Zeppelin" was over the Atlantic on its return trip to Germany, bold three line "Received Too Late/for/Graf Zeppelin Dispatch" purple handstamp, stamp is well centered and attractive, card with small faults including light creases, none affecting the stamp or marking, otherwise very fine; this card has a ms. date of "2.VI.30" by the sender, which would have been in time for the flight, whether the sender was delinquent in posting it or it was mishandled in the post office is not known, extremely rare usage and marking as this card and $1.30 cover in the next lot are the only examples we remember seeing in over 30 years of handling Zeppelin covers. 910 c C14 image#C14, $1.30 Graf Zeppelin, tied to cover to Germany by "New York, N.Y./ Varick St. Sta./Jun 5, 1930", long after the "Graf Zeppelin" departed on its return trip to Germany, bold three line "Received Too Late/for/Graf Zeppelin Dispatch" purple handstamp, stamp is exceptionally well centered and fresh, very fine; the schedule of the Zeppelin was well known in New York and the cost of sending cards and letters was no small sum in the midst of the depression, so postings that missed the flight are decidedly rare; this cover and the previous card are from the same correspondence, neither has any indication of the disposition of the two items, there was certainly sufficient postage paid for the them to be forwarded by ship, but no delivery markings are present, nor is there any instruction to return to the sender; extremely rare usage and marking as this cover and 65c card in the previous lot are the only examples we remember seeing in over 30 years of handling Zeppelin covers.
