1917-20 WAR TAX
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
2288 P S.G. #55P imageS.G. #55P, 1917 "WAR STAMP 1 1/2d" Surcharge proof from the De La Rue archives for use on the 2 1/2p Deep blue, on white wove paper affixed to piece of archival page, "14 May 1917" date handstamp at top, at bottom in manuscript "Approved/16. 5. 17" and initialed, pinholes and minor bend in the margins, otherwise very fine; this is the surcharge with the small numerals which was approved as noted, but hardly used because it was determined that the small numerals did not satisfactorily obliterate the original denomination of the stamp; extremely rare being the unique approval proof; ex-Green (Scott #MR3P). (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $2,600.00
Will close during Public Auction

2290 nhPB S.G. #53, 53b imageS.G. #53, 53b, "WAR STAMP 1 1/2d" surcharge on 2 1/2p Deep blue, no period after "Stamp", the small surcharge printed at Kingston in two steps, top right corner margin plate no. 5 block of six (3x2), the variety being the top left stamp (position R 1/4), slightly yellow o.g., stamps are n.h., minor perf. separation in the top selvage, very fine; the variety with period entirely omitted is actually quite rare, even though we know what position it is found in, it must have dropped out during production because many multiples with that position have the period present; ex-Green (Scott #MR1 var.). (Image) for hinged £480+

SOLD for $1,600.00
Will close during Public Auction
2291 og S.G. #55 imageS.G. #55, 1917 "WAR STAMP 1 1/2d" Surcharge on 2 1/2p Deep blue, select mint single of this scarce key war tax issue, wonderfully well centered, fresh rich color on bright white paper, o.g., very lightly hinged, extremely fine; it is believed that only 420 stamps were sold; 1989 David Brandon certificate; ex-Green (Scott #MR3; $900.00). (Image) £750

SOLD for $1,050.00
Will close during Public Auction
2292 og/nhPB S.G. #55 imageS.G. #55, 1917 "WAR STAMP 1 1/2d" Surcharge on 2 1/2p Deep blue, bottom right corner margin plate no. 5 block of six (3x2), a lovely block possessing bright strong color, fairly well centered, o.g., lightly hinged in the in the top strip, bottom strip is never hinged, some perf. separation in the left vertical row and inconsequential corner creases in the selvage, fine-very fine; this rare surcharge was exactly as intended by De La Rue, however after they got into production it was decided that the figures of value were not large enough to hide the old denomination so a revision was made, only about four sheets of this rejected issue were mixed in with the shipment to the Caymans and were sold; very few multiples above a block of four are known to yet exist, and a position block such as this is especially rare, as no more than twelve to sixteen plate blocks were originally issued and certainly far less that that exist today; 1998 BPA certificate (Scott #MR3; $5,400.00+ for hinged). (Image) for hinged £4,500+

SOLD for $12,000.00
Will close during Public Auction
2293 O S.G. #55 imageS.G. #55, 1917 "WAR STAMP 1 1/2d" Surcharge on 2 1/2p Deep blue, lovely single tied to exquisite piece by "Georgetown/Grand Cayman/SP 10 17" c.d.s., Type 5 pmk., both the stamp and piece are especially clean and fresh, bright vivid color, quite well centered, very fine and exceedingly choice; as we have noted, any example of this rejected surcharge is exceptionally scarce, but any postally used piece is incredibly rare as far less were used than remained mint, and many of those were lost or thrown away; a wonderful opportunity to acquire a select used example that is missing from even the most advanced British Commonwealth used collections; 1992 Peter Holcombe certificate; ex-Marston (Scott #MR3; $2,250.00). (Image) £1,900

SOLD for $2,500.00

2294 c S.G. #53, 54 imageS.G. #53, 54, 1917 "WAR STAMP 1 1/2d" Surcharge on 2 1/2p Deep blue, single of the smaller two-step surcharge and horizontal pair of the larger surcharge, both done at Kingston, Jamaica, tied to unusual registered cover by "Georgetown/Grand Cayman/MY 11 17" c.d.s., Type 5 pmk., being used in the proper period prior to the De La Rue overprints, posted to Melbourne, Australia to a naval chaplain at the Navy Office in that city, blue crayon "Grand Cayman" registry etiquette, Type R6, at left and crossed out when a Melbourne label was affixed, routed via Kingston, New York and San Francisco with those cities' transits on reverse, backstamped Melbourne and redirected to Portland, Victoria and backstamped there also, some edge wear and slight staining, very fine; a rare and appropriate wartime cover to this unusual destination paying double the 1p Empire letter rate, 2p registry fee and 1/2p war tax (Scott #MR1, MR2). (Image) Est. 400-500

SOLD for $1,200.00
Will close during Public Auction
2295 O S.G. #55 imageS.G. #55, 1917 "WAR STAMP 1 1/2d" Surcharge on 2 1/2p Deep blue, two singles, one with right sheet margin, along with 1/2p Green (S.G. #41), all tied to an attractive registered cover front to Canada, by "Georgetown/Grand Cayman/SP 9 17" c.d.s., Type 5 pmk., at left is a blue crayon "Grand Cayman" registry etiquette, Type R6, both of the war tax stamps are unusually well centered and attractive, light vertical fold at right affecting the 1/2p value, a very fine cover front with impressive appearance; a proper wartime franking paying 1p Empire letter single rate, 2p registry fee and 1/2p war tax for a total of 3 1/2p; the rarity of this rare war tax stamp used is well illustrated by this usage, it is well known that used examples are considerably harder to find than mint, but when it comes to an on-cover usage the field is amazingly limited, (Image) Est. 7,500-10,000

SOLD for $8,000.00
Will close during Public Auction
2296 c S.G. #57, 59 imageS.G. #57, 59, 1919 "WAR STAMP" Overprint on 1/2p Green and "WAR STAMP 1 1/2d" Surcharge on 2 1/2p Orange, horizontal pair of the latter, all tied to registered cover to Jamaica by "Georgetown/Grand Cayman/NO 7 19" c.d.s., Type 5 pmk., with rare purple "Grand Cayman" registry handstamp, Type R9, stamps are attractive and well centered, very fine; this cover represents the proper payment of 1p Empire letter rate, 2p registry fee and 1/2p war tax; when Giraldi and McCann wrote their work on The Postal History of the Cayman Islands they noted that this registry marking was previously unrecorded and listed only a two month period from September to November of 1919 when it was in use, very rare this being the only example we have seen (Scott #MR5, MR6). (Image) Est. 300-400

SOLD for $260.00

2297 c S.G. #59 imageS.G. #59, 1919 "WAR STAMP/1 1/12d" surcharge on 2 1/2p Orange, two horizontal pairs tied to unusual registered cover to Scotland by "Georgetown/Grand Cayman/FE 4 19" c.d.s., Type 5, bearing a blue crayon "G Cayman/R 4758" registration marking with "Grand" abbreviated to "G", Giraldi and McCann list this as extremely rare with only three examples known and listing this date as the only known date, this date is also the issuance date of the stamp, making this a first day cover as well, very fine and rare cover; ex-Green (Scott #MR6). (Image) Est. 400-500

SOLD for $600.00

2298 og/nhO S.G. #53-54b, 56-59 S.G. #53-54b, 56-59, 1917-20 War Stamp accumulation of hundreds of largely mint stamps representing all values except the rare thin numeral value that were not supposed to have been issued, each value ranges from singles to large multiples, we note several panes of 60 and a full sheet of 120 of the 1/2p Green, a study has been made of the small and large two-line "War/Stamp" surcharges showing overprint flaws (there are at least five completely missing fraction bars on the large overprint), there are also numerous plate blocks, etc., o.g., many n.h., only a few used are present, fine-very fine; a wonderful hoard for the study of these interesting overprints (Scott #MR1-2, 4-7).
