1900 QUEEN VICTORIA ISSUE ESSAYS AND PROOFS continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
2041 E S.G. #1E-2E imageS.G. #1E-2E, 1900 1/2p and 1P Queen Victoria essays cplt., a similar set to the above, each an imperforate key-plate proof in the issued colors, both with country name and value tablets hand painted in colors similar to the key-plate design, each affixed to small pieces of card, the 1/2p has a mild horizontal crease, otherwise a fine-very fine pair of these extremely rare essays; three sets are believed to been produced, one each for the Crown Agents, the Cayman Islands Authorities and the De la Rue archive, a highly unusual circumstance to have all three of the known sets in one collection; 1978 RPS certificates for each; ex-Edmundson, Marston and Cooley (Scott #1E-2E). (imagea) (Image) Est. 3,000-4,000

SOLD for $6,750.00
Will close during Public Auction
2042 P S.G. #1P imageS.G. #1P, 1900 Queen Victoria master key-plate die proof, with blank country name and value tablet, but this example is specifically identified with the Cayman Islands with pencil notation "Cayman Islands" at top and listing 2 1/2p, 6p and 1/- values with design notations, in black on glazed card measuring 92x60mm, very fine; this proof was annotated at the time a request was made for these three additional values to accompany the 1/2p and 1p that had already been issued, all were to be the same Queen Victoria design, but because Edward VII had assumed the throne while this was being contemplated it was decided to wait for the new Edward VII designs to issue these new values; an important proof in the production of Cayman Islands stamps being unique thus; ex-Green (Scott #1P). (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $2,300.00
Will close during Public Auction
2043 P S.G. #2P imageS.G. #2P, 1900 1p Name and duty plate die proof, in black on glazed white card measuring 92x60mm, handstamp blue "5 Jul 00" date at top, very fine and rare; this is the only example in public hands that we are aware; ex-Byl, Cooley (Scott #2P). (Image) Est. 500-750

SOLD for $525.00

(Image) Est. 400-500

SOLD for $1,500.00
Will close during Public Auction
2045 S S.G. #1S-2S var. imageS.G. #1S-2S var., 1900 1/2p-1p Queen Victoria with "Specimen" overprints and "Ultramar" handstamps cplt., 25 sets of the U.P.U. specimen sets were sent to Lisbon for the Portuguese colonies, some of these were overprinted with this "Ultramar" handstamp (which means "overseas" in Portuguese), without gum as usually found, fine-very fine and quite scarce (Scott #1S-2S var.). (Image) Est. 300-400

SOLD for $1,100.00
Will close during Public Auction
2046 S S.G. #1S-2S var. imageS.G. #1S-2S var., 1900 1/2p-1p Queen Victoria with "Specimen" overprints, broken "M" variety cplt., this constant type flaw occurs in position 7/5 of both panes, the break is quite wide removing a piece of the left upright in the "M", very fine; a total of 750 specimen sets were distributed to the U.P.U., however only thirteen to fourteen of each value were overprinted with this plate variety, exceptionally rare (Scott #1S-2S var.). 2050 c S.G. #1a, 2 imageS.G. #1a, 2, 1900 1/2p Pale green and 2p Rose carmine, a single and block of four of each value, tied to similar 1901 registered cover to London as the previous lot by "Grand Cayman/Cayman Islands/7 JY 01" c.d.s., Type 3 cancel of Georgetown, Jamaican transits and backstamped London, trace of perf. toning, very fine; Ludwig Zissler of London had several covers with this type franking posted to him, all being the earliest recorded registered cover from the Cayman Islands using Cayman Island stamps; ex-Green (Scott #1-2). (Image) Est. 400-500

SOLD for $500.00
Will close during Public Auction
2051 c S.G. #2 imageS.G. #2, 1900 1p Rose carmine, single neatly tied to German reply post card by "Grand Cayman/Cayman Islands/7 JY 01" c.d.s., Type 3 cancel of Georgetown, two line "Jamaica/Transit" handstamp and with Zehlendorf receiving c.d.s. on the front, additional Cayman Islands cancel and Kingston, Jamaica transit on the reverse, very fine; this is addressed to the famous dealer Otto Bickel, but it is very much a commercial usage as he was inquiring about stamps available at the post office and the Postmaster, R.E. Bodden, responds on the reverse as to what is available; use of this first issue on postal stationery and other forms of printed matter is very scarce and the card offered here is the earliest recorded usage on a postal card; ex-Byl, Cooley (Scott #2). SOLD for $475.00

2052 c S. G. #2 imageS.G. #2, 1900 1p Rose carmine, attractive and well centered single with rich intense color, tied to a unusually interesting commercial cover paying the Empire letter rate to London by "Grand Cayman/Cayman Islands/Ju 6 02" c.d.s., Type 3 Georgetown cancel, the normal routing for such a letter would by through Kingston, Jamaica, however this cover has a lovely Key West, Florida transit with no Jamaica connection, then to New York with foreign branch transit and on to the United Kingdom, very fine; an exceptional scarce and handsome first issue cover in the proper period (Scott #2) (Image) Est. 500-750

SOLD for $700.00

2053 c S.G. #2, 3 imageS.G. #2, 3, 1900 1p Rose carmine horizontal pair along with 1/2p Green Edward VII, tied to attractive cover by two especially clear strikes of the "Cayman Brac/Cayman Islands/MY 27 04" c.d.s., the Type 2 cancel of Stake Bay, posted to Mr. Isaac C Ryan on the Schooner "Union" in care of G.W. Pryor & Sons at Pensacola, Florida, Kingston transit and routed through Boston (a bit out of the way) with that city's flag machine cancel, reduced at right, a very fine commercial usage from this smaller post office; the 1p King Edward value had been in use since mid-1903, but because the supply had run out the 1p Victoria were pressed back in service; a very rare cover believed to be one of three such covers known of this correspondence (Scott #2, 3). 2060 TC S.G. #3TC, 7TC imageS.G. #3TC, 7TC, 1902 1/2p Blue, 1/2P Brown and 1/- Orange imperforate trial color proofs, on gummed watermarked paper and affixed to portion of De La Rue archival Appendix sheet, inscribed at the top "29th Novr. 1901/Cayman Islands/Req.51/1901", approved and initialed in pencil at bottom, proofs are all exceptionally well margined ranging from large to extra large, very fine; this is the approval sheet for the three additional values requested by Jamaica for the Cayman Islands, blue was assigned to the 2 1/2p in keeping with U.P.U. specifications, brown for the 6p and orange for the 1/-, this last is the actual color and design as issued, also this orange was evidently developed specifically for that value of Cayman Islands as it is designated that way in the Ink Recipe Book; in addition these color selections are bit unusual on the 6p and 1/- as it was standard practice, for security reasons, to print colonial stamps above 2 1/2p in value as bi-colored; an extraordinarily handsome archival piece of the greatest rarity (Scott #3TC, 7TC).
