2177 F S.G. #18 imageS.G. #18, 1907 "1/2D" on 5/- Salmon and green, two singles, one with strong overprint, the other with light surcharge showing the "D" and a light, but distinct, "2", both tied to picture post card (depicting Sheldon Road in Georgetown), posted to the Governor of Jamaica, with exceptionally crisp strikes of "George Town/Grand Cayman/NO 26 07" c.d.s., Type 4 pmk., being the first day of issue, neat Kingston transit at left and "Chapelton/Jamaica/DE 5 07" receiving squared circle pmk., all markings are on the address side, couple of minor mounting scuffs on the photo side and slightly reduced at left, very fine. The alleged shortage of the low values has led to some of the most interesting of Cayman Islands' stamps and postal history. This shortage became acute in 1907 and the 1/2p Kingston Provisional was produced in Jamaica to alleviate the situation. But only three months later the 1p value was needed and this was produced by the postmistress in Georgetown on November 22, 1907 by surcharging excess 5/- values that were not in great demand. Only four days later, on November 26, 1907, it was decided to also surcharge a 1/2p value in the same way since the Kingston Provisional had now been exhausted. These provisionals quickly drew the attention of collectors and mint examples readily found their way into collectors albums. Used examples of these issues are decidedly scarcer and, quite frankly, undervalued in the standard catalogs. Very few used stamps, let alone legitimate non-philatelic covers, are known. This is illustrated by the fact that there is only one cover and this card recorded that are franked only by "1/2D" on 5/- Salmon and green values. With this being used on the very day that the surcharge was made this card is unquestionably one of the premier pieces of Cayman Islands postal history; ex-Cooley (Scott #18).
