1445 ogc U181 var. image#U181 var, 6c Red on white, die 62, size 25, knife 123, wmk. 4, unusually fresh and attractive mint entire for this largest size, bright color and fresh white paper, choice very fine; this "US/Postal Service" watermark is a most unusual watermark that was primarily used on on Post Office Department official envelopes and was probably only intended to be used for these officials, there are only two 6c envelopes, such as this, and two 3c Green envelopes of this same Plimpton series of the regular postal envelopes that are found with this watermark, all probably done in error and generally quite rare and seldom seen (UPSS #512).
