1861 ISSUES
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1003 c 63 image#63, 1c Blue, with Leeds & Franklin pre-cancel, stamp tied to folded printed enclosure for the "Stamp Sealing and Postmark Preserving Envelope" by "New York/112 B'W/Leeds and Franklin" company c.d.s. used to pre-cancel the stamp and envelope on this advertisement demonstrating the use of their envelope, cancel is beautifully struck, the envelope is no longer present but underneath the stamp can be seen the tear away tab that was part of the envelope over which the stamp was to be affixed, extremely fine; the advertisement lists seven reasons why this special envelope was advantageous for security and dating of the enclosure, the basic purpose was to use the stamp to seal the envelope and enclosure together by placing the stamp over a partially cut-out window that allowed the stamp to be affixed to both the envelope and the enclosure, when the enclosure was removed the stamp remained with the enclosure, tearing away from the envelope, the purposes and promotion of this unusual envelope are interesting in them selves, however in sending these advertisements the company affixed the stamps and pre-cancelled them with their company c.d.s. handstamp; this is the only recorded example of one of the earliest pre-cancelled stamps and especially desirable on the company circular; ex-Bleuler. (Image) Est. $1,500-2,000

SOLD for $4,500.00

1006 c 73 image#73, 2c Black with famous "Running Man" fancy cancel (S-E #PH-F49), a magnificent strike of this remarkable and extremely detailed fancy cancel showing a man with hat in full stride with his coat tails fluttering behind, an inverted strike tying a 2c "Black Jack" to a local drop cover in New York City with "New-York City/Aug 1" c.d.s. at left just tying, very fine and remarkably choice; this cancel is well known within philatelic circles and is often represented as the epitome of a fancy pictorial cancel, being one of the few of this stature that is not a Waterbury, Conn. cancel, unlike the Waterbury cancels there is surprisingly little information about this cancel and what is even more amazing is that its fame has occurred when there are practically no examples of this cancel known; the example offered here, from the Gordon Bleuler collection, is the only known certified example on cover that we are aware of, being especially desirable on a "Black Jack" cover; a phenomenal fancy cancel rarity; 2006 PF certificate; ex-Bleuler.
