1356 c 42 image#42, 1860-63 1/- Rose, watermark double-line numeral, in combination with Victoria 1863 6p Black (#71) watermark single-lined figures (2) on 1865 (Nov. 22) envelope (opened out for display) from Moulame to London (Jan. 18, 1866) via Donilquin (Nov. 23) and Melbourne (Nov. 25), the New South Wales adhesive cancelled "59" in rays and additionally tied by crisp "London Paid" c.d.s. in red for the postage to Melbourne, while the Victoria stamps, which paid the ship rate to England, are cancelled "1" in bars in blue; since the Riverina residents of towns near the Murray River in south-central New South Wales found that letters routed through Mellbourne rather than Sydney would catch an earlier ship, thereby saving practically a week on the trip to England, they were obliged to pay double postage, since New South Wales and Victoria were independent Colonies, in order to take advantage of this expeditious service; the stamps, which are well tied by the cancellations, have at one time been lifted, probably to examine the watermarks, leaving negligible water staining; an excellent example of the rare Riverina combination cover; 1996 Holcombe certificate (S.G. #167 + #107b).
