Henniker Heaton, Member of Parliament, autographed appeal signed, this British politician was one of the most influential forces towards the end of the 19th century in the campaign to secure penny postage to anywhere within the British Empire, the 1898 2c Imperial Penny Postage stamp of Canada was issued after his success in this endeavor, this manuscript note entitled "Imperial Penny Postage" reads "I appeal to public opinion, to the hundreds of millions who own our Gracious Sovereigns sway. I ask them to make intercourse between their sundered coasts as easy as speech, as free as air. I entreat them to tolerate no longer this excessive taxation on the expression of their fraternal sympathies and on the growth of their trade" and signed by him; a marvelous piece of postal history for this historic reform that is comparable to that of Rowland Hill over a half century earlier; ex-Bain. HousePall Mall, S.W.5 Feb. 1896 and signed by Francis Knollys, the P1896 letter from the Prince of Wales' (Edward VII) Secretary, to J. Henniker Heaton, Member of Parliament, the letter is written on mourning stationery datelined "Marlborough House/Pall Mall, S.W./5 Feb. 1896" and signed by Francis Knollys, the Prince's personal secretary, the letter acknowledges Heaton's letter that apprised the Prince of the present position of the Imperial Penny Postage question, he states "His Royal Highness directs me to assure you that he warmly approves of the principle of the scheme..." and repeats a similar sentiment at the end of the letter, a very fine and important document; the Prince's support led the Postmaster General to propose the Prince's birthday of November 9, 1898 as the inaugural date for the Penny Postage, but the Queen objected to this tribute and it was inaugurated on December 25, 1898; the collector's article in "Maple Leaves" October 1994, Whole no. 250, pp327-328 confirmed the exchange of letters between Henniker Heaton and the Prince of Wales; a lovely companion to the Heaton document in the previous lot.
