ITALIAN STATES COLLECTION
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
113 ogngO Italian States massive mint and used collection balance in three stockbooks containing over 1,000 stamps that have been counted, but there is considerably more than that in forgeries and reprints that have not been counted, each state is represented and contains mint and used in various proportions depending on the state, for example few used Romagna are present and they have only been counted if they are signed by various Italian experts, some of the more important areas include Lombardy-Venetia which includes a modest but nice group of used first issues plus mint and used values of later issues, there is a fair number of Modena including a few varieties, lots of Roman States with many used first issue, Sardinia includes a few early issues but lots of different shades, mint and used, of the later issues which would be excellent for the study of the various printings, excellent value is found in used Tuscany, Two Sicilies contains mostly used Naples including a couple of postal forgeries and mostly mint Sicily plus Neapolitan Provinces shades in mostly mint, the forgeries add an interesting dimension as there are all kinds present, usually there is a section after each state of the various forgeries and reprints ranging from crude to quite good, there is also a portion of another stock book that is filled with hundreds of forgeries, we even note a couple of sets of six sheets of 25 of Spiro forgeries of Tuscany, none of this has been counted, condition is very mixed as is almost always the case with large accumulations of this classic material, faults will be found throughout, but we have not counted items that are badly faulty, o.g. is found on some mint, particularly the later issues, but unused and regummed are present, nevertheless there are also numerous stamps of more modest value that are fine-very fine; this is an excellent opportunity for the student of this area who examines this accumulation as he will find much useful material; Scott catalog value is at least $200,000.00 with the potential for more; stamps will be found throughout signed by various experts and accompanied by a half dozen certificates.
