2231       imageU.S. Mail Agency in Vera Cruz, Mexico Collection, 1914. Extensive collection of hundreds of covers and cards, much mounted and written-up on pages; includes a "U.S.S. Dolphin, Apr 7, 1914" postmark on postcard from Tampico two days before the paymaster and a detachment of marines where arrested by Mexican Federals officers starting the U.S.-Mexico conflict, letter datelined "U.S.S. San Francisco, Hdqts, Custom House Vera Cruz, Mex., Apr. 26, 1914" on Mexican official letterhead from marine/sailor detailing the gruesome takeover of Custom House in the April 21st, early postal history including a April 20 registered letter to Sweden mailed a day before the takeover with next postmark being a U.S. Seapost registration handstamp of May 31 due to U.S. Postal Agency not starting operation until May 4th, with additional May 4th and May 5th First and Second Day of operation usage of U.S. Mail Agency (using provisionally the Mexican postmarks), May 10th First Day usage of the "U.S. Vera Cruz Mexico" flag cancellation (first U.S. postmark used) as well as latest known on Nov 10th, May 19th local usage with U.S. 1¢ stamp, later usages showing proper/improper usages of U.S. and Mexico postage, unusual postmark and philatelic usages, comprehensive section of Naval postmarks used during the occupation including mail room slips, well over 100 rare unused real-photo postcards and much more, generally F.-V.F. or better.
