102       imageBermuda, 1941 Bermuda - U.S. Naval Combination. Commercial use from serviceman on USS Tuscaloosa with U.S. 1938, 15¢ Prexie, two singles + 1926, 10¢ Airmail (820+C7) tied by bold "U.S. Navy, May 28 1941" purple 3-bar cancel on air cover to Lisbon, Portugal, U.S. Navy censor handstamp in same color as cancel, but then refranked with proper Bermuda 2sh keyplate tied by indistinct Hamilton cancel paying the air rate to Portugal, cover arrived 2 days later with Lisbon backstamp; couple sealed cover opening tears, still Very Fine, a unique and very unusual usage.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

This is a remarkable usage that was written up in the Bermuda Post magazine as the cover should have gone to the U.S. and then back through Bermuda on commercial air flights of the time. If the serviceman wanted the cover to be expedited on a clipper going through Bermuda at the time, it would make sense he would add a Bermuda stamp to do so. it is unlikely the U.S. base would have allowed him to take the cover to the Bermuda civilian post office if the cover had already been censored on base. Needless to say, it is the only such combination keyplate franking in existence in combination with U.S. stamps used at the U.S. naval base in Bermuda.
