1089		7c Vermilion, Grill (138). I. Grill, brilliant color, cancelled by bold strike of New York Foreign Mail Geometric, perfectly centered with wide margins EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 7-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE WITH THE DESIRABLE I GRILL. THIS STAMP HAS BEEN GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE. The I Grill is slightly smaller in size than the H Grill and is more difficult to find, especially on the higher denominations. We started keeping track of the different grill types approximately seven years ago, and this is only the fifth we have offered for the 7c in any condition. If Scott Catalogue were consistent, they would list the I Grill separately, as they do for the 1867-68 Grilled Issues. P.S.E. encapsulated (Superb 98, SMQ $9,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date and only one other shares this grade. SMQ and the Population Report do not differentiate between the two grill types, but the other example to achieve this grade is an H Grill, and it realized $9,500 hammer in our Sale 976. 1092		30c Black (154). Original gum, choice centering with wide margins, beautiful deep charcoal shade and detailed impression EXTREMELY FINE. THE 1870 30-CENT NATIONAL UNGRILLED ISSUE IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT OF ALL BANK NOTE ISSUES TO FIND IN SOUND, WELL-CENTERED, ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION. During the past few years, we have offered a few superb original-gum examples of other 30c Bank Note issues, most notably Scott 165. Collectors have recognized the rarity of these stamps, bidding aggressively for the best stamps and often setting record prices. Without gum as issued, full perforations on three sides, straight edge at right is apparently natural as we detect a trace of the arrow at bottom right, dark color on fresh paper, wide margins EXTREMELY FINE. FEWER THAN 40 OF THE 1875 3-CENT CONTINENTAL SPECIAL PRINTING ARE BELIEVED TO EXIST. Our recently updated records for Scott 169 contain 35 examples that have been certified as genuine by the Philatelic Foundation (including one on cover). A HANDSOME EXAMPLE OF THE 7-CENT 1875 CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. Our recently updated census records for Scott 171 contain 70 certified examples. Most stamps were scissors-separated, affecting the perforations on at least one side and in some cases two or three sides. The stamp offered here, with virtually intact perforations on all sides, superb centering, and remarkably vibrant color is, in our opinion, a great condition rarity. Without gum as issued, vibrant color and sharp proof-like impression on bright white paper, choice centering, usual scissors-separated perforations intact on two sides and blunted at bottom VERY FINE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY WELL-CENTERED EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT 1875 CONTINENTAL SPECIAL PRINTING. Our recently updated census records for Scott 174 contain 38 certified examples. Of these, an overwhelming majority have the perforations scissors-separated on at least one side. Only five or six have intact perforations, and of those perhaps half are faulty.
