VERY FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST REPORTED COVER IN PRIVATE HANDS WITH A POSTMARK FROM WHAT IS NOW MAINE. IT PREDATES THE OTHER RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS MARKING BY A YEAR. A PHENOMENAL RARITY OF THE BRITISH COLONIAL PERIOD.

During this period Maine was attached to Massachusetts. Falmouth at the time incorporated the areas now containing Portland, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and Westbrook. Its postmark is the only one known from Maine during the British Colonial period. The other example in private hands, ex Siskin, is a Dec. 19, 1770, inbound folded letter from Charlestown Mass. to Falmouth, which was forwarded to Portsmouth. (Image)

"2.16" dwt rate, red "1/4" due in local currency (2dwt16gr=8p x 1.67 inflation factor=14p plus 2p carrier fee, or 1sh4p) on folded cover addressed in the hand of Samuel Chase to noted printers William and Thomas Bradford in Philadelphia, copy of contents placing order (original no longer accompanies), January 24, 1772 docketing, tear at top, some edge reinforcements, otherwise Very Fine strike, this is the first handstamped marking used in Baltimore, the sender was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was appointed by Washington to the Supreme Court and was impeached, the recipient was a famous anti-British printer whose Pennsylvania Journal rivaled Benjamin Franklin's Gazette, in 1774 his paper carried the famous picture of a divided snake with the motto "Unite or Die."
