EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL BRITISH COLUMBIA AND UNITED STATES 1861 ISSUE MIXED-FRANKING COVER CARRIED FROM VICTORIA, VANCOUVER ISLAND, TO SAN FRANCISCO BY WELLS, FARGO & CO. EXPRESS.

This was handled by Wells Fargo's office in Victoria. Even though Wells Fargo carried it, the postage prepayment requirement was the same as if it went through the mails. The recipient, Louis Braverman, came to San Francisco as part of the gold rush and opened the first jewelry and watchmaking store in that city.

The marvelous cover comes from the Raymond Vogel collection. It did not fit with his "working" collections, but he prized it as the most beautiful British Columbia express cover he had ever seen. (Image)
