SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 24-CENT 186924c Green & Violet (120). Unusually choice centering with Jumbo margins, light strike of circular datestamp at bottom and with quartered cork cancel at top, vignette clearly visible

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT VALUES OF THE SET TO OBTAIN WITH SUCH WIDE MARGINS. A TRUE CONDITION RARITY.

Surviving used examples often show the tendency of postal clerks to zealously cancel high-denomination stamps, which were typically used on mail to foreign countries or on heavy registered letters. The stamp offered here, with Jumbo margins and with the design clearly visible, is a great rarity.

With 1981 P.F. certificate (Image)

Rich colors and detailed impressions, used with 10c Yellow Green, F Grill (96), s.e. at top and tied by quartered corks, magenta "San Francisco Cal. Paid Jul. 30" circular datestamp on blue 1869 folded cover to Lima, Peru, matching "24 cents" credit handstamp, clear strike of "Panama AU 13, 1869" transit datestamp, receiving backstamp, blue "A. Vignier San Francisco" company handstamp, faint horizontal file fold well clear of stamps

VERY FINE AND A UNIQUE COMBINATION COVER. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE USED WITH ANY STAMP FROM A PREVIOUS ISSUE. IT IS ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE USED FROM THE WEST COAST AND ADDRESSED TO PERU. ONE OF THE GREATEST 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE COVERS IN EXISTENCE.

The stamps on this cover pay the 34c rate to Peru. It was carried by American Packet from San Francisco to Panama, where it entered the British postal system. It was then carried from Panama to Callao on a Pacific Steam Navigation Co. steamer and from there to Lima.

The 1869 Census book lists a total of 72 24c 1869 Issue covers, including twelve used with non-1869 Issue stamps. Of these, one is a Postal Stationery item, and the rest are combinations with Bank Note stamps. This is the only 24c 1869 cover with stamps of any previous issue. The cover offered here is not listed in the census, and was overlooked by the authors, probably because it had been off the market for a long period of time.

Signed and dated by Stanley Ashbrook in 1955. With 1988 P.F. certificate (two years after the census book was printed) (Image)
