Brattleboro Vt., 5c Black on Buff (5X1). Position 6, large margins to clear incl. sheet margin at left, crisp impression, cancelled by both red numeral "5" and matching "Paid" handstamps,
also with unusual plate flaw just to the left of signature, vertical crease, tiny tear at right VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE BRATTLEBORO POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL. ONLY 32 COIPES ARE RECORDED OFF COVER. THIS
EXAMPLE IS ESPECIALLY NOTEWORTHY DUE TO THE PRINTING FLAW AND ALSO THE "PAID" AND "5" RED CANCELLATIONS. A GREAT RARITY. A total of 52 Brattleboro provisional stamps are recorded (32 off cover and 20 on 19 covers). Of these, many are faulty due
to the softness of the paper. No other example of Position 6 shows the odd black spot of printing ink to the left of the initials, so this flaw must have either developed late in the life of the plate (if, in fact, it is a depression in the engraved
plate) or it was the result of foreign matter adhering to the plate. With 2010 P.F. certificate (Image) Search for comparables at SiegelAuctions.com |
