THE FINER OF TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 1870 24-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE ON COVER. ONLY RECENTLY IDENTIFIED AS A GRILLED STAMP AND CERTAINLY AMONG THE MOST IMPORTANT LARGE BANK NOTE ISSUE COVERS EXTANT.

This cover was sent by the Boston firm of Baker & Morrill to Captain Erastus B. Chase during the journey of the Radiant from 1868 to 1871. A copy of Captain Chase's account book, including this trip, can be found at http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/8040812. Additional papers are located in the G. W. The 24c 1870 Grilled Issue (Scott 142) was available concurrently with the ungrilled 24c issue (Scott 153). The 12c and 24c stamps with the H Grill almost always have weak or part grill impressions. The 24c has long been recognized as the rarest of the 1870 Grilled Issue (without distinguishing between the H and I Grills), and only one other 24c stamp on cover has previously been identified with a grill. It is used with the 3c 1870 on a large domestic courthouse cover with stains around the stamps that was last offered in the Bruce G. Daniels Nov. 5-6, 1953, sale of the James E. Hughes collection (lot 599, signed on back by Dr. Carroll Chase). The cover offered here comes from a correspondence that came to light more recently, and the 24c shows several clearly-defined points from the bottom right corner of the grill, just behind the neck of Winfield Scott's bust. The wide imperforate inter-pane margin at right indicates this stamp came from one of the right vertical column positions in the left pane (sheets were divided into panes). If the sheets were divided into panes of 100 before grilling, then this stamp from the right outer edge of the pane would be more likely to pick up grill points from the right outer edge of the grill.

The 34c British Mail rate to Singapore included 4c retained by the United States for postage to England and 30c credited to Great Britain for postage to Singapore within the British mail system. Based on the Boston Sep. 13 and London Sep. 27 postmark dates, this cover was carried on the North German Lloyd's Hansa, departing New York on Sep. 14, and arriving at Southampton on Sep. 27, 1871.
