Grinnells, Balances & Groups
Lot Sym. Lot Description
920°   ImageGrinnell Counterfeits of 2c, 5c and 13c Missionaries, Affidavit and Correspondence. The 2c and 5c with hinges on back signed "W.P.W." for Capt. Walsh of the Secret Service, hinged on business card from George Henry Grinnell, 13c tied on piece by forgery of "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Jan. 7" circular datestamp, accompanied by original affidavit signed by Grinnell and dated August 28, 1924 stating how Grinnell came to own these, also with correspondence from Grinnell to Edward Stern of Economist Stamp Co. from 1924-25 (Aug. 12 and 26, Feb. 27 and March 14) offering him singles with the affidavit if he returns a previous letter, also with typed transcript of letter from Stern to Col. Green where he opines that they are bogus and speculates that they may be of French manufacture, lots of other items are also included, such as typed reporter's transcript of Klemann v. Grinnell from Los Angeles in 1922, philatelic newspaper clippings, also incl. some unrelated philatelic notes from Irving Green, the "Missionaries" with some flaws

A RARE AND USEFUL ASSEMBLAGE OF ALL THREE DENOMINATIONS OF THE INFAMOUS GRINNELL "MISSIONARIES", WITH AN AFFIDAVIT AND ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN GRINNELL AND EDWARD STERN OF THE ECONOMIST STAMP COMPANY.

The three stamps here, combined with the correspondence, shows an increasingly assertive Grinnell attempting to influence the opinion of one of the top dealers of the time, and the dealer's responses. (Image)
