VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE USE OF THE HACKFELD FORWARDER'S MARKING ON A DOUBLE-RATE 24-CENT 1861 SSUE COVER FROM HAWAII TO ENGLAND. ONLY EIGHT EXAMPLES OF THIS FORWARDER'S MARKING ARE RECORDED BY FRED GREGORY.
This cover was carried on the bark A. A. Eldridge, which departed Honolulu on July 20, 1864, and arrived in San Francisco Aug. 10, The earliest recorded use of the Hackfeld marking is July 9 -- this is the second earliest reported use. (Image)
VERY FINE. A REMARKABLE COVER, SENT FROM THE FOREIGN MINISTER R. C. WYLLIE ON OFFICIAL BUSINESS TO THE HAWAIIAN CONSUL IN GERMANY AND FRANKED WITH UNITED STATES STAMPS FOR THE DOUBLE 28-CENT RATE PRUSSIAN CLOSED MAIL RATE AND 2-CENT SHIP FEE.
This cover was carried on the A. A. Eldridge, which departed from Honolulu on Nov. 23, 1864, and arrived in San Francisco on Dec. 7. The frank by R. C. Wyllie applied to Hawaiian postage only. The U.S. stamps pay the double 28c Prussian Closed Mail rate to Germany plus the 2c ship captain's fee.

FINE. A RARE USE OF THE HACKFELD & COMPANY OVAL HANDSTAMP ON A "HAWAIIAN STEAM SERVICE" COVER.
This cover was carried on the COMSS Idaho, which departed Honolulu on Dec. 10, 1867, and arrived in San Francisco on Dec. 23. Only eight examples of the Hackfeld & Co. oval are recorded by Fred Gregory, and this is the only example used on a cover with the "Hawaiian Steam Service" marking (Image)
A FINE AND RARE QUINTUPLE-RATE COVER WITH THE "HAWAIIAN STEAM SERVICE" OVAL HANDSTAMP AND UNITED STATES 1861-63 ISSUES, INCLUDING THE 2-CENT BLACK JACK. THIS IS THE HIGHEST RECORDED FRANKING WITH THIS MARKING.
This cover was carried on the COMSS Idaho, which departed Honolulu on Dec. 10, 1867, and arrived in San Francisco on Dec. 23. Fred Gregory records a total of 90 covers bearing the red "Hawaiian Steam Service" oval handstamp. Of these, only 16 are franked solely with U.S. stamps, this being the highest rate. The 25c Hawaiian postage was paid in cash.
