FINE APPEARANCE. THE 1853 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA III BLACK TRIAL COLOR PROOF IS EXTREMELY RARE. ONLY THREE "SETS" OF BOTH VALUES ARE KNOWN TO US.

The three "sets" of 5c and 13c Kamehameha III trial color proofs in Black are as follows: 1) ex Tows and Honolulu Advertiser, 2) ex Ishikawa, and 3) the set in the Golden collection. The Pietsch sale contained a different example of the 5c (ex Crocker), but not the 13c. Our sale of the Drucker collection contained a fifth 5c proof, but not the 13c. (Image)
