305° c Image1861, 5c Blue, Thin Bluish Wove (9). Large margins to in at top right, tied by sharp strike of square grid cancel, red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Mar. 28" (1865) circular datestamp, used with United States 1863 5c Brown (76), both stamps tied by San Francisco target cancel on bright orange-buff cover addressed to "T. M. Coan M.D., U.S. Stmr. Sebago, W. G. Blockading Squadron, New Orleans La., U.S.A.", bold strike of "San Francisco Cal. Apr. 17, 1865" double-circle datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXTRAORDINARY MIXED-FRANKING COVER FROM HAWAII TO A UNITED STATES NAVY MEDICAL OFFICER WITH THE WEST GULF BLOCKADING SQUADRON.

This cover to Titus Munson Coan was carried by the bark Smyrniote, which departed from Honolulu on Mar. 28, 1865, and arrived at San Francisco on Apr. 17. An earlier cover to the same addressee (Siegel Sale 789, lot 623) was sent in Aug. 1864 and erroneously marked with the "Foreign" handstamp and "Due 4" straightline at San Francisco during the period when they mistakenly applied the 10c blanket ship rate to Hawaiian mail. The correct U.S. postage rate of 5c (3c plus 2c ship fee) was accepted on the cover offered here. The West Gulf Blockading Squadron was tasked primarily with preventing Confederate ships from supplying troops and with supporting Union troops along the western half of the Gulf Coast, from the mouth of the Mississippi to the Rio Grande and south, beyond the border with Mexico.
