EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1859-63 2-CENT NUMERAL ON GRAYISH WITH THE "2" AT TOP OF RECTANGLE. PROBABLY THE FINEST UNUSED EXAMPLE EXTANT.
The "2" at Top is one of the most prominent typographic varieties on the Numeral plates. It is found exclusively among stamps printed on grayish paper (Scott 16). The numeral was raised on only one position -- Type IX (Position 9) -- on Plate 3-C (the first printing at the Government Printing Office), Plate 3-D and Plate 3-E. Examples are scarce, but sound unused copies are rare. This superb unused example with huge margins is the finest we could locate among past auction sales.
