154 c Image10c Dark Green, First Design (62B). Rich color, tied by cogwheel cancel, matching "San Francisco Cal. Dec. 13, 1862" double-circle datestamp on buff cover to Bridgeport Conn., "Forwarded by Chas. N. Brooks & Co., San Francisco" oval handstamp, with original enclosure datelined "Yokohama Oct. 6, 1862", endorsed "Storm Cloud" and carried by that schooner which departed Yokohama on Oct. 28 and arrived in San Francisco Dec. 10, stamp affected from placement at edge of cover, cover slightly reduced at left and with some edge flaws

FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1861 ISSUE FIRST DESIGN, SCOTT 62B, USED ON A COVER ORIGINATING IN YOKOHAMA, JAPAN. A RARE CIVIL WAR PERIOD USE.

This is the only example of Scott 62B on a cover either to or from Japan we have offered since keeping computerized records.

Yokohama merchant's handstamp, Montreal "Jy 23 '72" receiving backstamp, file folds crease the 10c stamp, Fine appearance, only three such covers from Japan to Canada via the U.S. are recorded, this was carried on the Pacific Mail Steamship Co. America, which departed Yokohama on Jun. 22, 1872 and arrived in San Francisco on Jul. 13, 1872, it went overland by railroad to Canada, the rate from Japan to the U.S. was 10c, and the treaty rate from the U.S. to Canada was 6c (Image)
