309 c ImageFort Hamilton N.Y. Cover bearing 3c Rose (65) cancelled by grid, "Ft. Hamilton N.Y. Jul. 23, 1862" double-circle datestamp and addressed to Major R. A. Parrish, 1st Cal. Regt., Burns' Brigade, Sedgwick's Division, Harrison's Landing, Virginia, endorsed "Via Fortress Monroe" at lower left, docketed at left "Gen'l. C. R. P. Stone July 22nd 1862", with original contents written and signed by General Stone regarding request to make a statement, cover with some soiling, stamp with flaws, still Very Fine, a rare cover sent by Union General Stone while in prison after his arrest, he was blamed for the debacle at Ball's Bluff and imprisoned without being charged for 189 days, his imprisonment resulted in an Act of Congress forbidding the detention of any officer or military man for more than 30 days without being formally charged (the Act passed July 17, less than a week before this was written), Harrison's Landing was used as General McClellan's headquarters in July 1862 and was later used as a signal station and hospital (Image)
