Full impression of provisional handstamped marking with "E A Mitchell" signature in magenta, faults including thins and crease ONE OF FOUR RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE NEW HAVEN PROVISIONAL HANDSTAMP STRUCK IN RED ON WHITE PAPER WITH MAGENTA SIGNATURE. ONLY ELEVEN EXAMPLES OF THE NEW HAVEN PROVISIONAL ARE RECORDED, INCLUDING SEVEN IN RED AND FOUR IN BLUE. THIS WAS THE FIRST NEW HAVEN PROVISIONAL TO BE DISCOVERED, IN 1871. We record one intact cover, two cut squares and one cut to shape of the 5c Red on White with magenta signature, plus two covers and one cut to shape with black signature. Discovered by William P. Brown in 1871 and described in Curiosity Cabinet May 1871. Ex Brown, Sanford, Hunter, Leavy, Wallis and J. David Baker. With 1948 P.F. certificate stating uncancelled. 23°		New Haven, Conn. 5c Provisional Reprints (8XU1R vars). 27 items on quadrille pages, clearly identified as to printing, consisting mostly of scarce to rare early printings including two of the extremely rare early 1870’s with black signature (one with affidavit from a friend of Mitchell swearing that he received the item from Mitchell before his death), seven of the 1871 or 1872 without signature, five of the 1874 with blue signature, nine without signature identified as 1876 including two in an unsevered pair, one with "1923" handstamp, 1932 final reprints signed in blue and black, two entires with facsimile signatures, fantastic range of papers and shades, mostly large margins, few small flaws to be expected VERY FINE. A WONDERFUL AND RARE GROUP OF NEW HAVEN POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL REPRINTS. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE PRINTINGS CLEARLY IDENTIFIED. Accompanied by booklet by Carroll Alton Means.
