Jan 18" (1865) double-circle datestamp on buff prisoner-of-war cover from Augusta, endorsed "Per Flag of Truce" to Jeffersonville Ind., forwarded to Green Castle Ind., prisoner's endorsement at left "W. S. Marshall, Adjt 51st Ind. Vols, Prisoner of War Augusta Ga", manuscript "Examined E.A.T." Confederate censor's marking (unlisted in Harrison), manuscript "Ford 3" for forwarding postage, pencil note "Nov 26 1864" probably refers to origin date, some edgewear, still Very Fine, Sgt. William S. Marshall was captured at Rowe Gap on May 3, 1863, he was at Libby Prison from May 13, 1863, to May 6, 1864, Danville Prison from May 7, 1864, and was later known to be at Camp Asylum (S.C.) -- Sgt. 2928		Civil War Correspondence. 2929		A Soldier's Letters. Nine letters (six covers with No. 65 accompany), written by Luther A. Granger, who was mustered into A Co. Pa. 57th Infantry and was killed at Gettysburg, written to his wife, eight of the nine are on patriotic stationery incl. 2931		Nashville Ten., Sep. 11, 1861. Circular datestamp perfectly struck in blue with matching "Paid" and "10" handstamps on buff cover originating in Confederate-occupied Columbus Kentucky and sent to C.S.A. Vice President Alexander Stephens in Richmond, carried to Nashville where it entered the C.S.A. mails, back with manuscript "John. G. Burch Columbus Ky., Sept 9th 1861 - Desires a change of position in the Army", missing backflap as usual with Stephens covers, Extremely Fine, ex Felton, Kentucky proclaimed its policy of neutrality on May 20, 1861, but the pro-Confederate and pro-Union citizens within the state were wary of an invasion force throughout the summer months, with each side accusing the other of breaching neutrality, finally, to preempt a Federal occupation of Columbus, General Leonidas Polk ordered General Gideon Pillow to move on Sep. 3 on Hickman and Columbus (Image) Search for comparables at SiegelAuctions.com	E. 500-750 SOLD for $325.00 Will close during Public Auction
2932		Bowling Green K.Y. Oct. 29 (1861). Bold blue circular datestamp with inverted date, manuscript "Due 10" with "10" changed to "5", on cover to Columbus Miss., soldier's endorsement at top "C.C. Malone, Co. K, 14th Miss. Regt." 2934		5c Blue, Local (7). Horizontal pair, tied by partly clear strike of Tenn. town datestamp on captured Union Patriotic cover to Glenn Springs S.C., design depicts Liberty with a U.S. flag and "The Constitution and the Enforcement of the Laws," neat manuscript inside the design states "Captured at Murfreesboro 31st Dec. 62 by J.B. High," and, in answer to the enforcement of the laws message printed on the cover, "not by Lincon" (misspelling the President's name), cover wear and small edge tears, most of backflap missing, Very Fine appearance, a wonderful example of a Union Patriotic cover captured on the first day of a major battle -- with Confederate sentiments written over the design -- the Second Battle of Murfreesboro, also known as the Battle of Stones River, was fought from Dec. 31, 1862, to Jan. 3, 1863, of the major battles during the Civil War it had the highest percentage of casualties on both sides (Image) Search for comparables at SiegelAuctions.com	E. 1,000-1,500 SOLD for $3,500.00 Will close during Public Auction
2935°		10c Milky Blue, Die A (11). Full to large margins, lovely pastel color, tied by bold strike of blue "Richmond Va." dateless circle handstamp on captured Union Patriotic cover to Dahlonega Ga., a beautiful multicolored design on yellow envelope with Eagle, American Flag, musical score and lyrics, "Soldier's Letter" at top and "Constitution/ Army for the Union" at bottom, James P. Herron imprint, stamp with small trivial corner crease from placement near edge, backflap tears EXTREMELY FINE. A SPECTACULAR CAPTURED UNION PATRIOTIC COVER WITH A RARE DESIGN, A BEAUTIFUL CONFEDERATE GENERAL ISSUE STAMP AND A SCARCE BLUE RICHMOND POSTMARK. Examples of the Richmond post office's dateless circle in blue are reported on covers from May-June 1863. This cover combines everything that can be desired in a postal history artifact from the Civil War. This is a rare Union Patriotic design that would be very desirable as an ordinary piece of U.S. mail. As a Confederate captured use, with a scarce Richmond postmark and the scarce Milky Blue shade of the 10c engraved stamp, it is immensely more desirable.
