United States Stamps continued...

United States Possessions incl. Hawaii, 1851 Issue thru Numerals
Lot Sym. Lot Description
2260 nh ImageCANAL ZONE, 1962, 4c Thatcher Ferry Bridge, Silver (Bridge) Omitted (157a). Position 11, Mint N.H. with left selvage, brilliant colors on bright paper

EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE THATCHER FERRY BRIDGE ERROR WITH SELVAGE AT LEFT. ONLY ONE PANE OF 50 WAS EVER ISSUED.

According to Canal Zone Stamps, one sheet, consisting of four panes of 50, was printed. Three panes were caught by postal authorities, while the fourth pane of 50 was sent to H. E. Harris & Co. as part of a larger order from the Canal Zone Philatelic Agency. At the same time this error was printed, the U.S. had issued the Dag Hammarskjold error in huge quantities. The Canal Zone authorities made plans to do the same, but were successfully sued by H. E. Harris, and the larger printing never took place. The pane was broken up in 1969. (Image)

FINE. A RARE SOUND UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT ON 13-CENT PROVISIONAL SURCHARGE.

The 5c provisional surcharge was necessary due to a shortage of 5c stamps just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson. Most were made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark, around the start of 1857. New supplies of the 5c stamp (Scott No. 8) were received at the end of June 1857. (Image)
