FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY FIVE CONFIRMED EXAMPLES OF THIS DOUBLE IMPRESSION VARIETY RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS. THIS IS ALSO THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO HAVE APPEARED ON THE MARKET IN THE PAST 20 YEARS.

Most double impressions occur when the first impression is made and found to be inadequate. The paper is then put in the press a second time, when it receives the heavier impression. It is a common misconception that the weaker impression is the second one.

Our census of Scott 147b is available at our website at http://siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/147b/147b.pdf. We record five certified examples (one with a control cancel) plus one uncertified on a cover which needs to be examined for authenticity. The example offered here is the only copy to appear at auction in several decades.

Our census of Scott 171 contains 70 certified examples plus one uncertified copy. Most stamps were scissors-separated, affecting the perforations on at least one side.

Jul. 8 10AM" duplex cancels on cover to Melbourne Australia, San Francisco and Boston transit and "AU 28 (18)82 Melbourne" receiving backstamps, small perf faults at top of the 10c pair which are really negligible, cover slightly reduced at left and with tape stains at sides

FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE COMBINATION PAIR OF THE 10-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE ISSUE WITH AND WITHOUT SECRET MARK USED ON A COVER TO AUSTRALIA. A POWER SEARCH REVIEW OF OUR WEBSITE FINDS NO OTHER EXAMPLES OF THIS COMBINATION PAIR ON A COVER.

A search of the online records of the Philatelic Foundation finds only one other example of this combination pair on a cover -- to Germany with no other stamps (PFC 225088) -- but that pair is not tied to the cover.

A Google search of the recipient revealed that he was a native of Wellesley Mass. who collected and performed research around the world on butterflies, gems and other related areas.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A PHENOMENAL MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT 1879 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE, GRADED SUPERB 98 XQ BY THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION.

This issue is often found in Mint N.H. condition, as several sheets have been broken in the past ten years. However, most of the stamps in these sheets are somewhat off-center, and examples such as this are very rare.
