VERY FINE SET OF THE DE LA RUE HIGH VALUES OVERPRINTED BOTH "SPECIMEN" AND "ULTRAMAR".
The Ultramar overprints were applied by Portuguese postal authorities on samples given by the U.P.U. countries to Portugal, where they were distributed to the Portuguese colonies. Very few exist today. Ex "Minoru". (Image)
VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THIS EXTRAORDINARILY RARE TRIAL COLOR PROOF. NO MORE THAN TWO OR THREE ARE RECORDED IN PRIVATE HANDS.
In 1909 it was decided to create a new 2p stamp for the King Edward VII definitive series. Trial color proofs were prepared in several colors before the tyrian plum was selected. Only 1-3 examples of each trial color proof are believed to be in private hands. 100,000 sheets of the tyrian plum were printed, but it was decided to delay shipment to post offices until current supplies of the 2p were exhausted. With the death of King Edward VII on May 6, 1910, it was decided to destroy the entire stock. Very few unused examples escaped destruction, and they are now considered major rarities of Great Britain.
Ex "Aurelius" and "Minoru". SG Specialised value (Image)
