Three large margins, in at left, tied by ms. stroke on undated folded cover to New York City, probably originating at Troy N.Y., circa 1844-45 A FINE AND FRESH COVER AND ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF INDEPENDENT MAILS. PROBABLY FEWER THAN A DOZEN EXAMPLES OF THE BLACK BRAINARD STAMP EXIST ON COVERS. With 1990 P.F. certificate. 1047		Brainard & Co., New York-Albany-Troy, 5c Black (24L1). Huge square margins, affixed with wafer, ms. "T" cancel (not tied), a remnant of a second stamp affixed to wafer at upper left, used on July 26, 1844 folded letter from Troy to Boston, no Brainard marking, conjunctive red "Forwarded by/American Mail Co./No. 12 State St. Boston" three-line handstamp, postscript to letter mentions use of express mail, ink smears at right, tiny tear in right margin of stamp VERY FINE STAMP AND PRESENTABLE COVER. ONE OF TWO RECORDED COVERS WITH BRAINARD'S STAMP USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH AMERICAN LETTER MAIL COMPANY SERVICE. Brainard & Co. provided service from Troy, but not to Boston, thus the letter was given to American Letter Mail Co. (transfer point unknown). It is one of two covers known to us which show conjunctive use of a Brainard stamp with American Letter Mail Company. "B" cancel (Albany), used on Mar. 13, 1845 folded letter to New York City street address, some splits in folds, toning ties stamp VERY FINE. ONE OF FOURTEEN RECORDED COVERS BELIEVED TO BE GENUINE USAGES OF THE BRAINARD & CO. 5-CENT BLUE STAMP. The Lyons census (The Penny Post, January 2006) reports sixteen covers with the Blue 24L2 stamp, but states that no more than fourteen of these are genuine usages. Ex Ferrary and Golden.
