Type 1), tied to piece by Mafeking c.d.s., fresh and well centered, very fine. There are only two recorded copies of this stamp, with this example being the discovery copy and the basis for the listing (footnote) in the Stanley Gibbons catalog. Both of the known examples remained unnoticed in various collection for years, until someone submitted this stamp to the BPA in 2004, as the normal (Type 2) surcharge. After consulting several experts in the field, the BPA concluded that is was indeed genuine, and that is was as of yet unknown status. When its discovery was announced, collectors and dealers immediately began to search the two shilling surcharges to see if any others had the Type 1 surcharge. Since then, only one other has been recorded. It is currently footnoted (and priced) in the Stanley Gibbons catalog, but is certainly deserving of major number status. An incredible rarity that may never make its appearance again for decades. Accompanied by a 2004 BPA certificate as mentioned above. (Image) £35,000
