May 9, 1840 Stampless folded letter from John Reed, Stamp Office Newcastle, to Messrs. Thorp & Dickson Stamp Office Alnwick, the letter reads "Having received
instructions from the Board to grant Stamp Licenses to all respectable applicants I will thank you to send me the names of the parties who have applied to you for such Licenses together with your opinion of their respectability and
circumstances", the lot also contains a page from a ledger book dated July 14, 1840 titled "Stock of Postage Stamps in the hands of Thorp & Dickson" giving details of Mulready 1p and 2p envelopes, as well as Penny and Twopenny labels,
fine; a rare and important pair of documents pertaining to the world's first postage stamp. (imagea)
