1368 c   Italy - Republic of Venice fifteenth century covers, this group of ten covers dates back over 500 years, from the time Venice was the trading center of the Mediterranean and the covers were delivered by messengers, this was the real beginning of the postal system that we know today, for a while these runners and/or ships delivered mail for merchants who displayed their "hall", "guild" or trade marks on the front of the cover, it was a long step forward from the ancient mails that were maintained for the use of the rulers and high nobility as well as high military officers, the covers are mounted on album pages and annotated and range from 1402 to 1459, included are covers to Alexandria, Crete and Damascus, as well as usages from Laodicea, Syria to Aman and Bugia, Syria to Venice, all in a remarkable state of preservation, most with guild marks and/or paid marks with string fasteners and seals, several with translations, very fine and unusual offering. However, the error was not discovered until 1922, when a collector at the Machioneal post office found a partial mint sheet. Since one used copy is known postmarked Kingston, the sheet must have been divided, with half going to Machioneal and the other half of the sheet to Kingston, where they were mostly used for telegraphs. While no formal census has been taken, most authorities put the number known at somewhere between ten and twenty. The example offered here, with its sheet margin, beautiful centering, vibrant color and being never hinged, is probably the finest of the small number extant.A superb example of one the most important errors of Jamaica, as well as being one of the key rarities for the Inverted Centers of the World collector (S.G. #85a; for hinged £30,000).
