Postal History
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
29 c 1 image#1, 5c Red brown, a lovely single with marvelous color and four very large margins, tied to an immaculate white cover to Cambridge, Mass. by excellent "New-York/Dec 16" red town circular date stamp, additional strike to right, extremely fine; a gorgeous usage of the New York town postmark tying the stamp, which is most unusual as the stamps where to have been cancelled by a grid postmark; ex-Boker. (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

Closed or SOLD for $2,200.00
Closing..Feb-23, 05:00 PM
30 c 1 image#1, 5c Red brown, a lovely single with large margins all around, the color is vibrant and the impression extremely crisp, this gem is tied to an immaculate brown cover by both a bold blue grid cancel and matching "Philada Pa./Jul 11" c.d.s., the enclosure and docketing at right place this cover in the mails in 1850, sent to Doylestown, Penna., extremely fine; an extraordinarily beautiful cover made the more interesting by the combination of cancels tying the stamp; ex-Boker. (Image) 750-1,000

Closed or SOLD for $950.00
Closing..Feb-23, 05:00 PM
31 c 1 image#1, 5c Brown, four close to large margins, tied to folded entire by unusual series of three strikes of red curved "PAID" handstamp, as well as a portion of the "New York/Apr 25" (1850) c.d.s., addressed to Baltimore, stamp with tiny flaws and preaffixing mild crease, otherwise very fine; a fortuitous usage of the "PAID" canceller which did not correspond to New York custom; a cover with striking distinctive appearance; annotated and signed by Stanley B. Ashbrook; ex-Hart, Boker. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

Closed or SOLD for $1,450.00
Closing..Feb-23, 05:00 PM
32 c 1 image#1, 5c Brown, ample to large margins, tied by red "Springfield Ms./9 Sep/5" rated c.d.s. to smaller cover having an embossed seal on the back flap, to Hartford, Conn., trivial age spots, very fine; it is not often that one finds the date stamp acting as the canceller on an 1847 Issue cover, although it is understandable in this instance, as the rate is incorporated into the postmark and rate handstamps were acceptable to cancel the issue; ex-Boker. (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

Closed or SOLD for $2,000.00
Closing..Feb-23, 05:00 PM
33 c 1 image#1, 5c Red brown, four full to mostly large margins, rich color and a strong impression, tied by black grid cancel on petite cover to Blackstone, Mass., red Boston c.d.s. alongside, very fine. (Image) 800.00

36 c 1 image#1, 5c Brown, choice four-margined single in a distinctive brown shade, tied to extraordinarily clean white cover to Albany, N.Y. by superb upright strike of blue "5" in circle cancel, also tied by choice matching strike of blue "Baltimore, Md./Mar 30" c.d.s., rarely seen with both postmarks cancelling stamp, because Albany was 339 miles from Baltimore the cover should have been rated 10c, extremely fine; a gem Five Cent 1847 cover possessing extraordinary eye appeal; ex-Stephen Brown, Boker. (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

Closed or SOLD for $2,400.00
Closing..Feb-23, 05:00 PM
37 c 1 image#1, 5c Brown, impressive single with three huge margins and ample fourth at bottom, tied to neat folded entire by extremely rare red large "6" circle postmark, a rate handstamp normally used on incoming ship letters, however this letter was sent from New York, with neat red "New York/Aug 24" c.d.s., and was addressed to Plattsburgh, N.Y., which is over 300 miles from New York City, hence this letter, franked only by a single Five Cent, was underpaid and rated due 5 with an appropriate red "5" rate handstamp to left of stamp, trivial scissor cut in huge bottom right margins well away from stamp, extremely fine and choice; we are aware of only four or five such usages, with this being the finest; ex-Caspary, Boker. (Image) Est. 3,000-4,000

Closed or SOLD for $5,750.00
Closing..Feb-23, 05:00 PM
38 c 1 image#1, 5c Grayish brown, select horizontal pair with full even margins all around, unusual shade, tied to neat 1849 folded letter to Boston by three complete strikes of unframed "10" numeral rate handstamp in blue, matching blue "Baltimore, Md./Dec 31" c.d.s. to left, a very fine and especially handsome cover showing the use of a rate handstamp to tie the stamps; ex-Boker. (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

Closed or SOLD for $2,100.00
Closing..Feb-23, 05:00 PM
39 c 1 image#1, 5c Red brown, four full to large margins, gorgeous color and impression, cancelled by virtually complete strike of red "Scarab" grid of St. Johnsbury, Vt., on immaculate light blue 1848 folded letter to Bath, N.H., superb matching strike of "St. Johnsbury, Vt./Sep 7" c.d.s. at left, stamp with preaffixing tear at bottom, which does not detracts from the visual appeal of this very fine and lovely cover; E. Jewett, the postmaster of St. Johnsbury, employed an oval 11-bar grid, 12 x 20mm, popularly known as the "Scarab"; it is one of the most popular of all cancellations found on the 1847's and rarely comes as well struck as found on this cover; ex-Sampson, Pope, Boker. (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

Closed or SOLD for $3,250.00
Closing..Feb-23, 05:00 PM

(Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

Closed or SOLD for $1,500.00
