524 og 296a image#296a, 4c Pan-American, Center Inverted, an extremely rare sound mint example of this important error rarity, being among the very few existing examples that is without any of the faults which affect the vast majority of known copies, part o.g., deep rich colors, quite well centered, particularly when compared to the existing population, very fine for this; there were two sheets of 100 each of the Four Cent Pan-Americans intentionally produced with centers inverted for Post Office records, and an unknown number of these were overprinted "Specimen", and still others were destroyed; the non-"Specimen" examples were mounted in a Post Office Department book resulting in the vast majority having disturbed gum, and a number were also thinned in an effort to remove them from mounting paper, therefore to find an example that escaped damage is a rare occurrence; 1962 and 1996 PF certificates; ex-Engel. 525 og 295a image#295a, 2c Pan-American, Center Inverted, perfectly centered, deep rich colors and strong impressions on unusually bright paper, full clean original gum that is not at all disturbed like the vast majority of known examples, lightly hinged, an extremely fine gem in every regard. An incomparable mint example of this important 20th century error rarity, whose overall condition in terms of centering, margins, color and preservation of original gum places it among the very finest in existence. There were originally 200 of these inverts that passed through the Post Office, but the number of examples which still survive today has yet to be determined with certainty, as the Datz catalog estimates a total of 150 unused singles, a mint intact block of four and 3 to 5 used singles. However, there are other estimates by knowledgeable philatelists which place the number of surviving copies at less than half the Datz estimate. In any case, the immense rarity of this popular stamp is unquestioned. An extraordinary opportunity for the serious collector wishing to acquire one of the great rarities of United States philately in the finest attainable condition. The catalog value quoted in Scott is for copies with slightly disturbed gum and, of course, those in premium quality with full original gum such as this command substantial premiums over the quoted catalog price. Signed (very lightly) "W.H.C." (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by 1973 and 1999 PF certificates; ex-Chapin and Argentum. (Image) 42,500.00

540 O 314A image#314A, 4c Brown, imperforate, Schermack Ty. III perforations, quite well centered within large margins, with unusually full perforations showing at right, and portions showing at left, deep luxuriant color, completely free of any of the faults which affect the majority of known examples, neat usual wavy line machine cancel, extremely fine for this. This stamp was issued in April of 1908 at the request of the Schermack Mailing Machine Company in Detroit. The Schermack Company, the largest and most well-known of the private vending and affixing companies, used large quantities of the one and two cent stamps of the period for their private vending and affixing machines. One of their customers, the Winfield Printing Company, placed an order with the Schermack Company to supply them with four cent stamps so that two of their clients, Hamilton Carhatt (a manufacturer of overalls and other men's clothing) and the Burroughs Adding Machine Company, could use the stamps to pay postage for sending their printed matter such as circulars or samples. The Post Office supplied a total of 10,000 of the requested four cent imperforate stamps to the Schermack Company so that the sheets could be cut into strips, pasted together to form coil rolls and then furnished with their well-known "perforations" for dispensing in their machines. No one in the philatelic world was aware of this special order, and had it not been for the fortuitous presence of a Detroit collector named Karl Koslowski, perhaps even fewer of these rare stamps would exist. It is believed that Mr. Koslowski, who learned of these new stamps through a friend at the Schermack Company, acquired 50 of these unusual stamps before departing on a trip to his Latvian homeland. There is some question whether he first saw the stamps in their imperforate form, or he may not have seen them until they had already been cut up and perforated. In effect, virtually the only known examples of this stamp are due to Mr. Koslowski, who retained approximately 20 unused examples and used the remainder on personal mail. There are just a few more known used examples which were taken off the commercial mailings of the Hamilton Carhatt and Burroughs companies, for an approximate total of 45 used examples. The stamp offered here is not only one of the few existing sound copies, but it is in a condition which places it among the very finest available. Accompanied by some interesting Koslowski collateral, as well as 1992 PSE and 1994 PF certificates. (Image) 25,000.00
