222 ogbl 189 image#189, 15c Red orange, magnificent quality mint block of four, with each stamp within the block being virtually perfectly centered within extra-large margins, strikingly intense color and impression, brilliantly fresh, o.g., all stamps very lightly hinged (two virtually n.h. with just a trace of a hinge sliver), extremely fine; a gorgeous Bank Note multiple. (Image) 1,750.00

223 nh 190 image#190, 30c Full black, a magnificent mint example in a quality that is rarely encountered on any Bank Note, let alone this scarce high value, marvelously fresh, with deep intense color, extraordinarily well centered amid considerably larger margins than typically found, pristine o.g., never hinged, extremely fine; any never hinged example of this value is a rarity, but scant few exist that are both never hinged and in the gem quality this stamp possesses; realizations on the few never hinged #190's that have appeared on the auction market over the last few years have approached, and in some cases exceeded, ten times this stamp's catalog value for a hinged example; 1997 PF certificate; ex-Fox. SOLD for $5,750.00

1880-1885 Special Printings of the 1879-1883 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
225 og 203 image#203, 2c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, well centered, marvelously vivid and intense color that is characteristic only to genuine Special Printings of this stamp, completely free of the faults that affect several existing copies, extremely fine for this. A choice and wonderfully fresh example of this immensely rare stamp, of which only 20 are recorded (18 have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation, plus two others - one of these is not available to collectors as it is in the Miller collection housed in the New York Public Library). Upon comparison to other known examples, it is readily apparent that this stamp ranks among the finest available due to its centering, freshness and absence of faults which affect several others. Recent auction realizations of #203 have shown that the Scott catalog value bears little relationship to the actual market value of this rarity. For instance, a very similar quality example was sold in our October 2001 sale of the William S. Floyd collection. His copy realized $52,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, after fiercely competitive bidding. An exciting and rare opportunity to acquire one of the great United States rarities in exceptional condition. Accompanied by a 1979 PF certificate; ex-Lilly and Donaldson. (Image) 26,000.00

SOLD for $50,000.00
Closing..Mar-08, 04:30 PM
