Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
121 c imageOD black (S.G. Spec. AS44) on fragment of the letter from which it was originally cut and with triangular section of the stamp neatly cut out where there was presumably the cancellation, applied with sealing wax on 1840 (Dec.) entire to Truro, tied by two strikes of Maltese Cross in red and showing "Truro" double-ring d.s. in blue adjacent, this clever attempt to defraud the post was detected by the officials, the cover endorsed "Stamp used before" and rated "2" for the double fine; a remarkable example of one of the few surviving instances of one of the attempts to reuse stamps, which was one of the ongoing fears of the post office, hence the reason for the numerous cancellation trials so well documented in this collection; 1990 RPS certificate.
