1341 O R156 image#R156, 8c Violet brown, magenta "I.R." provisional handstamped overprint of the Michigan Mutual Life Insurance Co., with their July 12 (1898) ms. cancel, one of the few completely sound examples of this rarity, with rich luxuriant color and impression, natural s.e. at right as often encountered, nearly very fine for this; only 44 are reported to exist; photocopy of a 1975 PF certificate for a block of four, this being the top right stamp. (Image) 4,500.00

SOLD for $1,350.00
Closing..Oct-19, 11:30 AM
1342 O R157 image#R157, 10c Dark green, magenta "I.R." provisional handstamped overprint, an incredibly well centered example, featuring uncharacteristically large and well balanced margins all around, natural s.e. at bottom as often found, usual "7/12/98" ms. cancel, faint horizontal crease along bottom, extremely fine appearance for this very rare stamp of which 66 are reported to exist; 1982 PF certificate. (Image) 3,750.00

SOLD for $1,500.00
Closing..Oct-19, 11:30 AM
1343 O R157 image#R157, 10c Dark green, magenta "I.R." provisional handstamped overprint, attractive used example of this rare provisional, deep luxuriant color, fairly well centered, neat central ms. cancel dated July 11, 1898, small thin spot, otherwise very fine for this; only 66 are reported to exist; 1982 PF certificate. 1344 O R158 image#R158, 15c Dark blue, magenta "I.R." provisional handstamped overprint, used, typical ms. cancel, intense color, centered a bit to right, several faults including a repaired tear at top and a sharp horizontal crease, fine appearance; an acceptable example of this very rare stamp, only 28 copies are reported to exist and almost all are faulty to some degree; 1984 PF certificate. (Image) 4,750.00

SOLD for $1,000.00
Closing..Oct-19, 11:30 AM
1345 O R158A image#R158A, 1c Dark yellow green, "Chapman" provisional overprint, an extraordinarily handsome example of this provisional revenue rarity, of which only 250 were issued, with government approval, for the private use by the Chapman Steamboat Line, which operated steamboat freighters along the Erie Canal; exceptionally well centered and margined, in fact this is clearly one of the finest centered examples available when compared to the small existing population, strong rich color and impression, very light and unobtrusive July 22, 1898 handstamp cancel whose day date was changed to "24" in manuscript, couple of minor creases including a small corner crease at top left, plus a small thin spot at top, actually much freer of the myriad of severe faults that affect most copies, overall very fine for this; in Larry Lyons' unpublished census, he records only fourteen examples, one of which is on a document and fully ten are faulty to some degree; a stamp that is missing in even the most advanced revenue collections; 1994 PF certificate. (Image) 10,000.00

SOLD for $4,500.00
Closing..Oct-19, 11:30 AM
1346 ng R158B image#R158B, 1c Dark yellow green, "P.I. Daprix & Son" provisional overprint, an immensely rare mint example of this famous revenue, despite the fact that there were supposedly 250 issued, this is one of only four in existence and the first such example that has been offered at public auction in several years, in fact even the massive Morton Dean Joyce revenue holdings did not have a copy of this stamp, wonderfully bright fresh color, attractively centered, small part o.g., some faults (including a corner crease and a thin spot) and every other known example is faulty to generally a greater degree, fine for this; one of the highlights of the Ballman revenue collection and one of the most important revenue stamps ever to be offered at public auction; the quintessential once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; of the four known examples, only three (including this stamp) have been certified, the uncertified example is quite faulty and heavily repaired; this is the second time we have had the pleasure to offer this important rarity, its first ever public auction appearance was in our January 2000 sale of the collection formed by Larry Lyons, its appearance created considerable bidder attention, resulting in a record realization of $23,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, which the editors of the Scott catalog used for their current evaluation; 1997 PF certificate.
