1861 First Design "August" Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
117 og 55 image#55, 1c Indigo "August", full original gum, lightly hinged, exceptionally fresh, with intense characteristic "August" color and impression, quite well centered when compared to all other existing copies (all known examples are centered slightly into the top perforations), but unlike most others, this stamp has fully intact perforations, very fine and exceedingly choice. It is believed that a total of 24 copies exist of the One Cent First Design or so-called "August" Issue. Of this total, two are cancelled and another is housed in the New York Public Library collection, leaving only 21 uncancelled copies available to collectors. More than half of the available examples are found either with faults, without gum or both. In fact, there are only eight that exist which are both completely sound and still retain their original gum, with the example offered here being among the finest of this elite group. A rare opportunity to acquire a premium quality original gum example of one of the rarest stamps in United States philately. Accompanied by a 1948 PF certificate (submitted by J.K. Lilly, Jr.); ex-Col. Green and Lilly. (Image) 20,000.00

Paul Wampler collection did not contain an example of this plate block; 1971 PF certificate; ex-Chapin. (Image) 15,000.00

SOLD for $17,500.00

120 og 57 image#57, 5c Brown "August", an incredibly fresh original gum example of this important rarity, possessing a remarkable overall brilliance very few of the other existing examples can boast, with sumptuously rich and intense color, plus its impression could not be more deeply etched on bright crisp paper, extraordinarily well centered, nearly full o.g., there are some nibbed or shorter perforations which is a prevalent characteristic to most known copies, nevertheless this is a very fine and choice example; only 35 examples of the Five Cent "August" issue are known (two of which are cancelled) and only 16 of the existing population still retain any portion of their original gum; none of the existing original gum examples are completely fault free, with this particular copy being among the best of this elite group; 1971 PF and 1993 PSE certificates; ex-Carey, Chanin, Sheriff and Weisman.
