309 O S.G. #37b/d imageS.G. #37b/d, 1886 "1d/Postage" provisional surcharge on 1 1/2p Orange revenue, surcharge double, and "Pfnce" for "Pence", the latter variety is found in the green surcharge used to make the basic revenue stamp, both black overprints are of nearly equal intensity, the slightly lighter is displaced about 2mm higher, clear portion of Grenada c.d.s. cancel, attractively fresh and quite well centered, very fine; an amazingly rare error that is one of only a very small number that can exist, and may be the only one that has survived; 1989 RPS and 1995 BPA certificates (Scott #27c var.). (Image) Est. 400-500

SOLD for $1,250.00

310 c S.G. #37b imageS.G. #37b, 1886 "1d/Postage" provisional surcharge on 1 1/2p Orange revenue, surcharge double, two horizontal pairs, centered just into the design at right, both surcharge impressions are distinct, the second being displaced about 1 1/2mm to the left and higher, both pairs tied to cover to Coeymans, New York by "Grenada/OC 30/86" c.d.s., with another strike at bottom left, New York duplex transit on the reverse, cover correctly pays the UPU 4p rate to the United States and from the known correspondence of H.W. Johnson, cover has minor flaws including a tiny nick at top, none of which affect the stamps, which are fresh and fine. This is a remarkable and extremely rare cover. One can appreciate the rarity of this cover because of the four scarce double surcharges. Even a usage of four 1p stamps intended for internal usage is certainly unusual. But there is something that is far more philatelicly important about this cover that makes it an amazing rarity. In 1886 three different revenue values were surcharged 1p to meet the need for that value in late 1886 awaiting the delivery of the new 1p Carmine tete-beche issue, which arrived in January of 1887. This is the only known cover that is properly franked for any usage, using any of the three issued stamps, during the correct time period of the last three-four months of 1886. There are usages on later covers after the new 1p were delivered, but no other is known used between September 1886 and early January 1887 for which these stamps were produced, making this a unique provisional cover; 1961 RPS certificate; ex-Henry, Amundson and Cartier (Scott #27c). (Image) Est. 5,000-7,500

SOLD for $8,000.00

311 E image1885 De La Rue Artist's essay, for an unissued key plate design, hand-drawn in lilac, red and white on thin buff paper, measuring 65x80mm, light creasing in margin, otherwise very fine and handsome; one of two known with one being sent to Grenada and the other retained by De La Rue (this probably the De La Rue copy), this was for new stamps having "Postage and Revenue" inscriptions, no order was made by Grenada because De La Rue was not discounting the printing as previously and the design was never used; ex-Gilbert-Lodge, Messenger, Hackmey and Towers. (Image) Est. 750-1,000

SOLD for $1,600.00
Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM
312 E S.G. #40 image1885 De La Rue 1p Bi-color essay for the 1p 1887 tete-beche issue (S.G. #40), hand-drawn in lilac, red and white on thin buff paper, measuring 70x87mm, mounted on card with "Oct 1886" manuscript date, mounting stains at top and bottom of paper and tear at right ending in a nick in the right margin, all of this not affecting the drawing, fine and rare; this is a second design proposed to Grenada in 1885 for new stamps with "Postage & Revenue" inscription, as above only two examples are known, this one is believed by the collector to be the example sent to Grenada because of the date, which would be when Grenada ordered the 1p issue delivered in 1887, De La Rue again made a price concession by printing the stamps at a discount rate of 1/4 per thousand, but in a single color and in tete-beche format as before; ex-Dale-Lichtenstein (for Scott #30). (Image) Est. 750-1,000

SOLD for $1,250.00
Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM

(Image) Est. 500-750

SOLD for $675.00
Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM

Closing..Jun-27, 01:00 PM
317 c S.G. #41 imageS.G. #41, 1888 "4d/Postage" provisional surcharge, 4mm spacing, on 2/- Orange revenue, tied to First Day Cover to Canada by indistinct Grenada c.d.s. but with clear strike at right clearly showing the March 31, 1888 date of the first day this stamp was placed in use, New York transit and Toronto backstamp, tears at top from rough opening resulting in a small piece missing at top right, slightly affecting the cancel, but not the all important date, clearly neither the postal clerk nor the recipient recognized the philatelic importance of this cover by the cancelling and subsequent careless handling, nevertheless a fine and rare cover, this being the only recorded First Day Cover (Scott #32). (Image) Est. 500-750
