104 39 image#39, 90c Blue, a magnificent used example of this value, which is one of a very few stamps in United States philately that is actually far more rare and valuable in used condition versus mint, extraordinarily well centered within generously large margins, printed in a beautiful dark shade of blue and with a crisp detailed impression on bright paper, and perhaps most significantly cancelled by light strikes of a black grid and red London transit c.d.s., extremely fine.Collectors of used nineteenth century classic stamps have always found the Ninety Cent of the 1857 Issue an especially difficult stamp, not just because it was a rare key value, but because all the other values of that issue saw far more use than this. This was because the rates were not conducive to wide use of the this value and being issued in 1860, not long before the demonetization of the all current postage stamps in 1861 due to the Civil War, it was in use for a comparatively short time. Furthermore, because used examples were rarer than the rather easily available unused stamps, they have been subject to the forger's efforts to fulfill demand. This has proved especially challenging to collectors to find an example of unquestioned authenticity. The example offered here is exceptional is several ways. It is the only known example with a London transit, which is not only rare but is immensely valuable in establishing the legitimate usage of this stamp. The black grid cancel is less common than the red grid that is found on most used examples. Plus its condition is stellar being completely sound and exceptionally attractive, which ranks this in the top three or four of the few certified used copies of this stamp that are available. The stamp offered here represents a rare opportunity to fill an important spot in a quality used collection by a gem of the greatest rarity. Accompanied by a 1993 PF certificate; ex-Hind, Seymour, Ishikawa and "Ganymede". (Image) $8,200.00
