1205 P 801P1a image#801P1a, 3c Puerto Rico, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size card measuring 203x152mm, from the collection of John Eissler, security punch in the bottom left corner of the design, a practice that started at about this period and is sometimes found into the more modern period, proof is attractive with strong color, faint stain to the card at bottom, very fine; Scott lists this proof only on India, but we are convinced that this proof on wove is the basis for their listing and that it only comes on wove paper from this period; a very rare proof and quite possibly the only large die proof of this issue known; W.R. Roach & W.K. Schrage, designers; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 70034; ex-Eissler. (Image) $800.00

1210 E image1937 150th Anniversary of the Thirteen Original States, artist's original models, a spectacular set of seventeen different models for a proposed series honoring the original states of the United States, this beautiful series consists of a main set of fifteen different large designs on cards measuring 162x108mm, includes denominations from 1c to 13c showing different designs for each of the thirteen states, plus a 1/2c value of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence and $1.00 District of Columbia, also two smaller designs measuring 105x90mm, including 1/2c Independence Hall and 3c New Jersey, these last two seem to be an alternate format proposal to be produced in the size of the 2c White Plains commemorative rather than the normal wide commemoratives of the mid-1930's as both New Jersey designs are similar, all are hand done in ink and wash with only three models incorporating photographs for a portion of the design, we do not know the artist or history of these essays, but they are exceptionally well done, it has been speculated that these were intended for a 1937 or 1938 commemorative issue for the statehood of these thirteen states since each has a statehood date in the design, a marvelous series suitable for exhibition; we think it a shame that they were never issued and in the vernacular "these are really cool"! 1211 P 835P1a image#835P1a, 3c Constitution Ratification, large die proof on wove paper, a rather unusual proof on a yellowish wove paper, proof measures 69x54mm and is remounted on a three-hole punched card measuring 188x136mm, acetate overleaf taped to card and Bureau approval handstamp from the original card reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed plus penciled name of the engraver, "Fenton" is taped to the back, small scuff to proof not affecting the design, very fine; listed but unpriced in Scott as a large die proof on India, this may be the item referred to and quite possibly the only large die proof known for this issue; V. 1214 TC 837TC image#837TC1, 3c Northwest Territory Sesquicentennial, large die trial color proof on India, die sunk on full size card measuring 152x203mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reads "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, plus "Arlt", the engraver, penciled at the bottom, remarkably clean and fresh being in pristine condition, extremely fine; this is the first large die proof on India that we have discovered since the issues of 1926 and before, others are found for a little while after this, but they appear to be the exception rather than the rule, the vast majority still being found on wove paper; an exceptionally rare proof that is not listed in the issued color, this is quite likely the only known large die of this issue; R.L. Miller, designer; Carl T. Arlt, vignette engraver; control number 577330 (1938). (Image) $900.00

1220 TC 854TC1 image#854TC1, 3c Washington Inauguration, large die trial color proof on wove paper, in deep purple, die sunk on full size card measuring 152x203mm, a proof from the Eissler collection, exceptionally fresh and attractive, extremely fine; an exceptionally rare proof and quite likely the only one known in this trial color; however the color is not that far from the issued color and it is well within the realm of possibility that this one proof is the basis for the listing of a large die proof in the issued color, as well as the trial color proof; A.R. Meissner, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 70038; ex-Eissler. (Image) $900.00
