Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1241 P 888P1 image#888P1, 10c Frederic Remington, large die proof on India, die sunk on large card measuring 141x203mm, a lovely engraver signed large die proof, very fresh and in excellent condition, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reads "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, signed Harry R. Rollins on the front after he had removed the proof maker's designation of Rollins name, extremely fine; an exceedingly rare proof and it is quite likely that this is the only example in private hands; (Image) $800.00

SOLD for $700.00
Will close during Public Auction
1242 P 891P1a image#891P1a, 3c Cyrus Hall McCormick, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size card measuring 153x203mm, a proof from the Eissler collection, very attractive and in excellent condition, deep color on bright paper, extremely fine; an exceptionally rare proof that is listed by Scott on India (and the last time this card was offered it was described as on India, showing how difficult it is to know what exists); we are of the opinion that this is the listing proof and the only example of a large die proof of this value in private hands; W.A. Roach, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 70043; signed Brazer; ex-Eissler. (Image) $800.00

SOLD for $575.00

Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1243 TC 894TC1 image#894TC1, 3c Pony Express, large die trial color proof on India, in dark brown, die sunk on three-hole punched card measuring 136x180mm, from the Brooks collection, a fresh and attractive proof being exceptionally clean, color is rich and deep, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, undoubtedly pulled for Brooks, the vignette engraver for this value, very fine; this issue is not listed in Scott as a trial color, however the last time this was sold it was offered as an ordinary die proof in the November 1994 auction of the Brooks collection by Jacques C. Schiff and it is very possible that is responsible for that listing; an extraordinarily rare proof of this popular subject which may be the only known large die proof in any color of this value in private hands; W.A. Roach, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 633103A (1940); ex-Brooks. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

Schrage, designer; J.R. Lowe, vignette engraver; control number 722661A (1942). (Image) $800.00

SOLD for $625.00

1248 TC 897TC1 image#897TC1, 3c Wyoming Statehood, large die trial color proof on India, in red violet, die sunk on three-hole punched card measuring 137x179mm, from the Brooks collection, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reads "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, small security punch hole, remarkably clean and fresh being in pristine condition, very fine; an exceptionally rare proof that is not listed in Scott in the issued color and is listed, but unpriced, as this trial color, this is quite likely the only known large die of this issue; A.R. Meissner, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 635186A (1940); ex-Brooks. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $1,350.00

1249 P 897P2 image#897P2, 3c Wyoming Statehood, small die proof on wove paper, measuring 28x43mm, a lovely proof with intense deep color, most trivial thin speck in the top margin, mentioned for strict accuracy, extremely fine and attractive; a rare proof; A.R. 1250 P 898P1 image#898P1, 3c Coronado Expedition, large die proof on India, die sunk on three-hole punched card measuring 178x136mm, from the Brooks collection, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reads "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, two small security punch holes, exceptionally clean and fresh, very fine; a very rare proof and another example of an engraver's proof that is most probably the only known large die of this issue; V.S. McCloskey, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 650505A (1940); ex-Brooks. (Image) $1,100.00

1252 E 899-E image#899-E, 1c National Defense, large die essay on wove paper, die sunk on large card measuring 140x162mm, a nearly completed engraving lacking the cross hatching in the shading of the background, plus there are some light horizontal lines in the white areas of the "For Defense" inscription that have not yet been cleaned out, quite fresh and very attractive, tiny spot of toning to the card at left, choice very fine; an unlisted essay not found in either Scott or Brazer, however a die proof on India is listed and since the other two values exist as engraver's proofs it is possible that this does also, but when this was recently purchased it was described as a die proof on India in the auction description, therefore it is conceivable that the regular die proof does not exist; certainly unique as an essay and a wonderful new discovery; W.A. Roach, designer; Carl T. Arlt, vignette engraver. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $850.00
Will close during Public Auction

Roach, designer; H.R. Rollins, vignette engraver; control number 656511A (1940). (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

Roach, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 732511A (1942); ex-Brooks. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

1258 P 904P2 image#904P2, 3c Kentucky Statehood, small die proof on bond, measuring 43x27mm, a pretty proof with bright color and detailed impression; extremely fine and exceptionally rare; starting with this issue (or perhaps the 3c Vermont Statehood, which was the first issue of 1941 and not in the Livingston collection) a paper change is noted in the small die proofs, instead of the thin wove paper with mesh that ranges from white to yellowish white, a bond paper was put into use that is stiffer, rather fibrous and without mesh, being more yellow than the previous paper, all of the remaining small die proofs in the Livingston collection, which end in the issues of 1945 near the last recorded issue, are on this paper; W.A. Roach, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver. (Image) $600.00
