Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1301 P 954TC1 image#954TC1, 3c California Gold Centennial, large die trial color proof on wove paper, in reddish orange, a striking and certainly more appropriate color to celebrate gold than the issued dark violet, a beautiful trial color proof, die sunk on large card measuring 191x136mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, very likely pulled for the vignette engraver, M.D. Fenton, "C" security punch taped back into place (a normal practice), acetate overleaf that was taped to the reverse has been carefully removed leaving hardly in sign of the tape, exceptionally clean and fresh, choice very fine; Scott lists neither this trial color proof nor a die proof in the issued color, very likely this is the only known example of a die proof of this issue in any color; C.R. Chickering, designer; M.D. Fenton, vignette engraver; control number 940612A (1947). (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

SOLD for $1,600.00

1302 TC 955P1a image#955P1a, 3c Mississippi Territory, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on large card measuring 190x135mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, plus "Fenton", the vignette engraver, penciled at the bottom, "C" security punch taped back into place (a normal practice), acetate overleaf taped to the reverse, an extraordinary clean and attractive proof, choice very fine; this value is listed by Scott on India but unpriced, it is very possible that this wove paper proof is the basis for that listing and that this is the only known example in private hands; W.T. Robinson, designer; M.D. Fenton, vignette engraver; control number 948929A (1948). (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $675.00

1303 P 956P1a image#956P1a, 3c Four Chaplains, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on large card measuring 192x139mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, probably pulled for M.D. Fenton, the vignette engraver, "C" security punch taped back into place (a normal practice), acetate overleaf taped to the reverse, a beautiful proof and exceptionally handsome, choice very fine; this value is listed by Scott on India but unpriced, it is very possible that this wove paper proof is the basis for that listing and that this is the only known example in private hands; C.R. Chickering, designer; M.D. Fenton, vignette engraver; control number 948653A (1948). (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

1304 TC 963TC1 image#963TC1, 3c Salute to Youth, large die trial color proof on wove paper, in violet, die sunk on large card measuring 190x136mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, probably pulled for M.D. Fenton, the vignette engraver, "C" security punch taped back into place (a normal practice), acetate overleaf taped to the reverse, small ink mark at right of the design, otherwise an exceptionally clean and choice proof, very fine; Scott does not list a regular die proof for this issue and most probably this is the only known example in any color in collectors' hands; V.S. McCloskey, designer; M.D. Fenton, vignette engraver; control number 954473A (1948). (Image) $900.00

SOLD for $900.00

1305 TC 964TC1 image#964TC1, 3c Oregon Territory, large die trial color proof on India, in dull violet, die sunk on full size card measuring 202x156mm, an extraordinary choice die proof in beautiful condition, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, plus "Arlt", the vignette engraver, penciled at the bottom, the "C" security punch, which is usually placed through the denomination of the design, is in the extreme bottom right corner of this card, exceptionally clean and fresh, extremely fine; this is the first proof on India that we have come across since a few proofs in the 1939-44 period; Scott does not list a a normal large die proof in the issued color, so it is quite likely that this is the only known example in private hands of a die proof in any color for this issue; C.R. Chikering, designer; Carl T. Arlt, vignette engraver; control number 955836A (1948). (Image) $900.00

SOLD for $850.00

1306 TC 968TC1 image#968TC1, 3c Poultry Industry Centennial, large die trial color proof on wove paper, in deep carmine, die sunk on full size card measuring 203x154mm, an exceptionally pretty proof in a color that is much more attractive than the issued sepia, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, plus "Fenton", the vignette engraver, penciled at the bottom, "C" security punch taped back into place (a normal practice), a wonderful proof in exceptional condition, extremely fine; Scott lists only a trial color die proof for this issue, but in red brown, it is hard to see how this carmine color could be confused with red brown, so it has to be assumed that this is different than the listed color; certainly the only known example in collectors' hands of this very striking carmine color; C.R. Chickering, designer; M.D. Fenton, vignette engraver; control number 957346A (1948). (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $725.00

1307 P 972P1a image#972P1a, 3c Indian Centennial, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on three-hole punched full size card measuring 203x154mm, from the Brooks collection, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, with "Brooks" written in pencil at bottom, "C" security punch taped back in place (a normal practice), exceptionally fresh with strong rich color, choice very fine; listed by Scott only on India, however there is evidence that this proof is the basis of the listing and that it may not exist on India; certainly a very rare proof that may be the only example in collectors' hands; R.L. Miller, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 957654A (1948); ex-Brooks. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

1308 P 975P1a image#975P1a, 3c Will Rogers, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size card measuring 152x200mm, a handsome engraver signed proof, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, pulled for the vignette engraver, M.D. Fenton, with his signature at the bottom of the proof paper, "C" security punch taped back into place (a normal practice), exceptionally clean and fresh, an attractive and extremely fine signed proof; listed by Scott only on India, but unpriced, however there is good evidence that this is the basis of the listing and that it may not exist on India; certainly a very rare proof that may be the only example in collectors' hands; C.R. Chickering, designer; M.D. Fenton, vignette engraver; control number 959030A (1948). (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

1309 P 977P1a image#977P1a, 3c Moina Michael, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on three-hole punched full size card measuring 203x152mm, from the Brooks collection, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, with "Brooks" written in pencil at bottom, "C" security punch taped back in place (a normal practice), exceptionally nice proof being both clean and attractive, choice very fine; listed by Scott only on India, however we have good reason to believe that listing basis for this issue was the 1995 Brooks sale by Jacques A. Schiff and this proof was purchased in that sale; this is the only large die proof that we are aware in private hands, and it is our opinion it does not come on India; Mae Michael & V.S. McCloskey, designers; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 961142A (1948); ex-Brooks. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

Glindmeir & C.R. Chickering, designers; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 983285A (1949); ex-Brooks. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

Gundersen, "C" security punch taped back into place (a normal practice), exceptionally clean and fresh, extremely fine; listed by Scott only on India, however this proof is probably the basis of the listing and it may not exist on India; certainly a very rare proof that may be the only example in collectors' hands; I. 1314 P 989P1a image#989P1a, 3c National Capital Sesquicentennial, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on three-hole punched full size card measuring 152x202mm, from the Brooks collection, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, with " C. Brooks" written in pencil at bottom, "C" security punch taped back in place (a normal practice), deep blue color, clean and extraordinarily fresh, choice very fine; the last time this proof was recently offered it was called a trial color, the blue being slightly darker than the issued stamp, however it is our opinion that this is an issued color die proof (issued stamp colors sometimes differ very slightly from the approved color); listed by Scott only on India, however this has been recognized as most probably the only example of a die proof this issue in collectors' hands; and probably isn't known on India; V.S. McCloskey, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 995888A (1950); ex-Brooks. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500
