1365 TC 332TC1 image#332TC1, 2c Washington, large die trial color proofs on card, a stunning collection of twelve virtually all different of the trial color proofs that were printed directly on card, this selection is well matched, all measuring about 50x53mm which is somewhat less than the die area possessing about 15mm margins all around that show their large die status, colors include black, one with "Lavender" contemporaneously written below the design, two different greens and oranges, three blues including a blue black and two similar dark blues, and three different browns, all are fresh and attractive, very fine; an exceptionally nice collection of these different colors, certainly a difficult task to assemble so many and especially appropriate for exhibition purposes; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver. (imagea) (Image) Est. 7,500-10,000

SOLD for $5,500.00

1366 TC 337TC image#337TC, 8c Washington, trial color die proofs, two different being in different shades of green on yellow experimental paper, stamp size but printed from the die and it is very possible that these do not come as large size proofs, faint diagonal crease to one, otherwise very fine and scarce; listed but unpriced in Scott; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver. (Image) Est. 750-1,000

SOLD for $575.00

1367 TC 338TC image#338TC, 10c Washington, trial color die proofs, a lovely collection of seven different being printed in different colors on different colors of experimental paper, stamp size with nice even imperforate margins but printed from the die and it is very possible that these do not come as large size proofs, design colors include brown, yellow, orange, green and black, paper colors include yellow, pink, lavender and blue, two proofs with small hinge thins and some oxidation to the orange colors as usual, very fine selection of these very scarce trial colors; listed but unpriced in Scott; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver. (imagea) (imageb) (Image) Est. 4,000-5,000

SOLD for $2,700.00

1368 E 338a-E1 image#338a-E1, 12c Washington, trial color die essays, classified as an essay because this Washington design was never issued in a 12c denomination, a marvelous collection of seven different being printed in different colors on different colors of experimental paper, stamp size with nice imperforate margins, design colors include green, violet, yellow, blue and carmine on yellow, plus brown and blue on blue, a few flecks of ink have chipped away from one, an exceptionally choice collection of this unissued value, very fine; Scott specifically states, "Virtually all are stamp size, imperf.", Brazer is even more explicit when he states, "All are die essays stamp size imperforate." which has lead us to believe that the other trial color values like these are always stamp size as well, in addition, the brown on blue has a Bureau control number 439181 on the back, dating this 1910; an extraordinarily handsome selection that is indispensable to anyone building an exhibition collection of the Washington-Franklin issues; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; 2001 PF certificate for the violet on yellow. (imagea) (imageb) (Image) Est. 5,000-7,500

Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver. (imagea) (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

SOLD for $1,400.00

1371 TC 342TC1 var. image#342TC1 var., $1.00 Washington, large die trial color proof on wove paper, in the so-called "pink" color (actually a dark rose), die sunk on full size card measuring 152x202mm, this being the special proof prepared for President F.D Roosevelt (see appendix B at the end of the catalog for other Roosevelt die proofs), a gorgeous proof with its card being immaculate on both the front and back, bright distinctive color, extremely fine in all respects. The story of this color and this particular proof is a very interesting one. Originally this value was approved in this pink color. The signed approval die proofs are in this color. However, when the stamp went to press they realized that this $1.00 high value looked too much like the ordinary letter-rate 2c value. They knew this would cause problems so a decision was made to change the color to the issued violet brown. Why would they then issue this special proof for President Roosevelt in a color other than what was issued? The answer is that the approval proof in the Bureau was in this pink color since the color change was made after they went to press, so they printed the proof for the President according to what was approved, not what was issued. Most significant is that this special proof is the only one that was issued on wove paper. Any approved proofs inside or outside of the Bureau printed at the time of the issue will be on India. The unique Franklin D. Roosevelt proof offered here is a magnificent proof for the Washington-Franklin specialist; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; control number 328956 (1933); ex-Roosevelt. (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; control numbers in order of denomination 328857, 328880, 328989, 328893, 329285, 329075, 329157, 329101, 329091, 328978 (1933); ex-Roosevelt. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver. (Image) $1,250.00

Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; control #344303 (1909); ex-Finkelberg. (Image) $1,500.00

1377 P 331P2-32P2, 334P2-42P2 #331P2-32P2, 334P2-42P2, 1c-$1.00 1908-09 Washington-Franklins, Roosevelt small die proofs cplt. less only the 3c value, each on the bright white paper of this special issue, with bright colors that are also characteristic of the Roosevelt proofs, all with nice even margins, thin spot on $1.00 which may indicate that these were mounted in a Roosevelt book at some time, otherwise extremely fine; this regular issue series, like the 1904 Louisiana Purchase commemoratives came out after the Roosevelt books were assembled, but a very limited number were issued, apparently with the intent of keeping the books up to date with new issues, unlike the regularly issued Roosevelt proofs, which were issued in a quantity of 85 of each, these late issue proofs are considerably rarer and much undercataloged with perhaps only a half dozen sets reaching public hands, C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver. (imagea) (imageb) $7,975.00

1378 P 331P2-42P2 var. image#331P2-42P2 var., 1c-$1.00 1908-09 Washington-Franklins, small die proofs on bond, a magnificent matched set of these small die proofs, being totally different from the Roosevelt or Panama-Pacific proofs, the accompanying certificate for the $1.00 calls it an "experimental die proof in accepted color", all are stamp size imperforate and have lovely even margins, plus bright attractive colors, an extremely fine and immensely rare set; not specifically listed in Scott except under the general category of small die proofs; one might rarely come across an isolated value, but to find a complete and beautifully matched set, such as the set offered here, may not be possible to duplicate; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; 1976 PF certificate for the $1.00 value. (imagea) (imageb) (Image) Est. 10,000-15,000

Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; control number 490311 (1911). (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

1380 TC 414TC1 image#414TC1, 8c Franklin, large die black proof on India, die sunk on full size card measuring 151x202mm, the India being untrimmed around the die sinkage, an impressive proof, normally the purpose of pulling a proof in black was to see the detail of the impression, rarely was it done as a trial for color purposes, "Mr. Schofield", the frame engraver for this value, is penciled on the reverse, very slight wear to the corners and small light stain in the extreme top right corner, very fine and choice; this proof was undoubtedly pulled for L.S. Schofield; it is the only example of this trial color of this value that we are aware and most probably the only known example in collectors' hands; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; control number 831066 (1917). (Image) $1,750.00
