1907 JAMESTOWN EXPOSITION
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1022 E 328-E1 var. image#328-E1 var., 1c Jamestown, large die essay on India, in green, die sunk on card measuring 109x94mm, pencil notation "Unfinished" at bottom, considerable shading on the vignette, heads in the upper corners and value tablets is not yet complete, exceptionally fresh and attractive; very fine and choice; Scott's listing is for a small die essay (30x24mm, slightly larger than stamp size) on soft wove paper, this corresponds with Brazer's listing, it is not known whether this is in the same state of the die as the Scott listing, but our suspicion is that this is in a different state of completion and therefore probably unique; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; ex-Woods. (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

SOLD for $2,200.00
Will close during Public Auction
1023 E 330-E1 image#330-E1, 5c Jamestown, large die essay on India, in black, die sunk on card measuring 123x132mm, this is an unfinished essay of the vignette only with most elements of the design being not yet complete, insignificant tone spot on card at left not affecting the proof, very fine; undoubtedly unique as Scott makes reference to the specific control number; C.A. Huston, designer; G.F.C. Smillie, vignette engraver; control number 245910 (1907). (Image) $1,750.00

SOLD for $1,900.00

Huston, designer, G.F.C. Smillie, vignette engraver; 1978 PF certificate. (Image) $5,000.00

SOLD for $5,250.00

Huston, designer, G.F.C. Smillie, vignette engraver; 1978 PF certificate. (Image) $4,250.00

1027 P 328P1-30P1 image#328P1-30P1, 1c-5c Jamestown, large die proofs on India cplt., an approval set, each die sunk on card measuring approximately 135x123mm., apparently bound in a presentation album as the left edges of the cards show slight abrasion from binding, prepared to be signed by the Third Assistant Postmaster General, who, in fact, did approve the 2c on March 28,1907, the other two have a small peace of the India cut away where "Third Assistant" was inscribed and signed by the newly appointed Postmaster General, George von L. Meyer, on April 8, 1907 for the 1c and April 17, 1907 for the 5c, this last date is very close to the opening of the Exhibition on April 26, 1907 and may explain why there are no known FDC's of the 5c on April 26th, there simply may not have been enough time from the approval of the die to the delivery of the stamps to deliver them to the exhibition by April 26th, very fine; a very rare set of die proofs and the only known signed approval proofs in private hands; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, R. Ponickau and G.F.C. Smillie, vignette engravers for the three respective values; 1978 PF certificate for the 5c. (Image) $3,000.00

1040 E 397-E var. image#397-E var., 1c Panama-Pacific, designer's model, very similar to the previous model, made in the same way with two photos to make a composite design except the inscription under "U.S. Postage" reads "Opening of Panama Canal 1913", slightly different touch-up to the palm trees and similarly drawn in "1 Cent 1" in white wash, mounted on thick grey card measuring 106x86mm, neatly inscribed in calligraphy "Bureau of Engraving and Printing/Approved" with handstamp signature of the Director, J.E. Huston, designer; 1990 PF certificate. (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000
