1922-1925 REGULAR ISSUE continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1401 P 573P1 image#573P1, $5.00 Carmine and black, large die proof on India, hybrid proof die sunk on nearly full size card measuring 147x198mm, this hybrid proof consists of an India proof mounted on a yellow bond paper in the die sunk area, this is the way all contemporaneous die proofs of this value that we have recorded come including all the approved proofs, only a couple late date proofs on wove paper, like the F.D. Roosevelt example, are apparently not hybrids, this one being an original proof of the 1922 period from the collection of John Eissler, exceptionally clean and fresh with great color, only a small minor corner bend to the card at bottom right, choice very fine; a select example of this rare high value; C.A. Huston, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 70141; ex-Eissler. (Image) $5,000.00

SOLD for $2,600.00
Will close during Public Auction
1402 P 572P1a image#572P1a, $2.00 Deep blue, large die proof on wove paper, measuring 33x27mm, this is called by the accompanying certificate a reduced large die proof on wove, rather than a small die proof, which may be true because of the slightly bigger and uneven size of the margins, but in either case our records show that wove paper die proofs of this value are far scarcer than India die proofs in any of their forms, very fine; C.A. Huston, designer; L.S. Schofield & L.C. Kauffmann. vignette engravers; 1978 PF certificate. (Image) $700.00

SOLD for $375.00
Will close during Public Auction
1403 P 554P3 image#554P3, 2c Carmine, plate proof on wove paper, attractive example of this scarce proof with full to extra-large margins, deep color, choice very fine; the accompanying certificate calls this a small die proof of #634(?), perhaps because of the larger margin at bottom, but clearly a plate impression, perhaps with a portion of sheet margin at bottom, not a die impression; listed in Scott but not priced; clearly a rare proof as they are almost never encountered; C.A. Huston, designer; M.W. Baldwin, vignette engraver; 1988 PF certificate. (Image) Est. 300-400

SOLD for $325.00
Will close during Public Auction
1404 P 557P3 image#557P3, 5c Dark blue, plate proof on wove paper, lovely even margins all around, luxuriant rich color, extremely fine; listed but unpriced in Scott and rare; C.A. Huston, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; 1988 PF certificate; ex-Griffith. (Image) Est. 300-400

SOLD for $210.00

1405 ogbl 551/73, 622-23 image#551/73, 622-23, 1/2c-$5.00 1922-26 Regular issue cplt. less the 6c Red orange, but including the 13c and 17c later issued values, all in sheet margin blocks of four with plate numbers and signed by Postmasters General Hubert Work or H.S. New (50c by W. Irving Glover, Third Assistant Postmaster General), generally dated on the the first day of issue except the 1 1/2c, 17c and 50c are not dated, and the four values issued on January 15, 1923 are dated on the 17th, all are fresh with strong deep colors, well centered, o.g. lightly hinged with up to three stamps in a block n.h., the $2.00 and $5.00 each have two never hinged stamps, very fine-extremely fine. 1930 REGULAR ISSUE
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1406 P 684P1a image#684P1a, 1 1/2c Brown, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size card measuring 153x202mm, this being from the special large die proofs prepared for President F.D. Roosevelt, small label attached to the reverse citing its Roosevelt connection, attractive bright proof being in overall excellent condition, one tiny tone spot on the proof paper, very fine and exceeding choice; this is another die proof that is only listed by Scott on India and not on wove; it is our opinion that this value only comes on wove and that this value has considerably less die proofs known than the earlier issues of the 1922-25 Regular issues, this proof being the unique example from the Roosevelt collection, C.A. Huston, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 334057 (1933); ex-F.D. Roosevelt. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $1,200.00
Will close during Public Auction
1407 P 685P1a image#685P1a, 4c Brown, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size card measuring 152x202mm, from the collection of John Eissler, overall quite attractive and fresh, slight corner wear, very fine and choice; a rare proof that is only listed on India, but it is quite probable that it only exists on wove; this engraver's proof and the one from the Roosevelt collection are the only large die proofs that we are aware; C.A. Huston, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 70090; ex-Eissler. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $1,800.00
Will close during Public Auction
1408 P 685P2 image#685P2, 4c Brown, small die proof on wove paper, stamp size proof with nice even margins, excellent impression of a die proof rather than a plate proof, very fine; Scott does not list a small die proof on wove or even a large die on wove; whether it was issued as a small die or was cut down from a large die is not known, undoubtedly rare; C.A. Huston, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; 1989 PF certificate. (Image) Est. 400-500

SOLD for $675.00

1938 PRESIDENTIAL ISSUE
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1409 E 804-E image#804-E, 1c 1938 Presidential, artist's drawings for the design competition, three attractive and well done designs, in green watercolors, standard 6x7 inch designs on large artist boards measuring 253x303mm, each a different head of George Washington, similar to the vignettes of the Washington Bicentennial issue with designs taken from famous portraits, including the 2c Stuart, 6c Trumbull and 8c Saint Memin, each has a radically different frame ranging from traditional to quite modern, all seem to have been done by the same unknown artist, who was actually quite good, much better we think than the Thos. F. Morris designs that Brazer used to illustrate designs for this competition, very fine; each is unique by their very nature and though many participated in the competition rarely are these seen, especially in this high quality. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $600.00

1410 P 805P2 image#805P2, 1 1/2c Martha Washington, small die proof on wove paper, measuring 32x35mm with large 6mm margins, mounted on a quadrille card, very fine; rare and unusual; W.K. Schrage, designer; L.C. Kauffmann, vignette engraver. (Image) $650.00

SOLD for $3,500.00
Will close during Public Auction
1411 P 809P1a image#809P1a, 4 1/2c Dark grey, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size card measuring 150x201mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reads "Engravers Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, with "Lowe", the vignette engraver, in pencil at bottom, "C" punch around the left "4 1/2" denomination, an exceptionally clean and attractive proof with only a slight corner bend to the card at bottom right, choice very fine; this is only listed in Scott as on India, however very few 1938 Presidential issues are known in large die proofs, it is our opinion that this is the listing example and that it is the only large die proof of this value in public hands; W.K. Schrage, designer; James R. Lowe, vignette engraver; control number 722660A (1942). (Image) Est. 1,500-2,000

SOLD for $2,800.00
Will close during Public Auction
1412 TC 810TC1 image#810TC1, 5c James Monroe, large die trial color proof on India, in dark gray blue being considerably darker and grayer than the issued bright blue color, die sunk on nearly full size card measuring 147x198mm, from the Eissler collection which are characterized by having the original blue control number removed and a black five-digit number applied, lacking any security punch as is so frequently applied to this issue, remarkably clean and fresh being in excellent condition, very fine; an exceptionally rare proof that is listed in Scott in the issued color but not in this color, however this was listed as a normal die proof when it was purchased and therefore it is quite likely this is the listing proof; this is the the only large proof of this value in our records and it is undoubtedly the only known large die in any color; R.L. Miller, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 70036; ex-Eissler. (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

SOLD for $3,750.00
Will close during Public Auction
1413 P 812P1 image#812P1, 7c Sepia, large die proof on India, die sunk on three-hole punched card measuring 137x178mm, from the Brooks collection, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, with "C. Brooks" written in pencil at bottom, tiny security punch hole in each denomination, an especially attractive and bright Brooks proof, very fine and choice; this is the only example of a die proof for this value in our records; it is certainly a very rare proof that may be the only example in collectors' hands; W.K Schrage, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 556493 (1938); ex-Brooks. (Image) $1,500.00

SOLD for $2,500.00

1414 TC 814TC1 image#814TC1, 9c William Henry Harrison, large die trial color proof on India, in red orange, close to the color of the 6c value, die sunk on three-hole punched card measuring 137x178mm, another lovely proof from the Brooks collection, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, with "Brooks" penciled at bottom, two tiny security punch holes in each denomination, fresh and clean, choice very fine; this is listed in Scott as a normal die proof on both India and wove papers, but not as a trial color proof, however this was listed as a normal die proof in the Brooks sale and was called "previously unreported" (we have found no other reports since then), we are not sure how many more die proofs are in public hands, if any, nevertheless it is quite likely that this is the only trial color in public hands; W.K Schrage, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 554818 (1938); ex-Brooks. (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

SOLD for $3,750.00

1415 P 817P1 image#817P1, 12c Bright Violet, large die proof on India, die sunk on full size card measuring 153x203mm, from the Eissler collection, lacking any security punch as is so frequently applied to this issue, quite attractive with only some small tone flecks in the outer portion of the card and small bend in extreme top left corner, very fine; Eissler proofs are characterized by having the original blue control number removed and a black five-digit number applied, an exceedingly rare proof, this being the only one in our records, and it is quite likely the only known large die of this value in collectors' hands; W.K. Schrage, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 70037; ex-Eissler. (Image) $1,500.00

SOLD for $2,600.00

1416 TC 820TC1 image#820TC1, 15c James Buchanan, large die trial color proof on India, in black, die sunk on three-hole punched card measuring 137x178mm, from the Brooks collection though his name has been erased from the reverse, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, tiny security punch hole in each denomination, another fresh and clean proof from the Brooks collection, choice very fine; this value is listed in Scott as a normal die proof on both India and wove papers, but not as a trial color proof, however this was listed as a normal die proof in the Brooks sale and was called "previously unreported" (we have no others recorded since then), we do not know whether it exists in the issued color, but we are quite sure that this is the only trial color in public hands; R.L. Miller, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 555343 (1938); ex-Brooks. (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

1417 TC 824TC1 image#824TC1, 19c Rutherford B. Hayes, large die trial color proof on India, in violet with no where near the red tone that is found in the bright violet of the 12c or this even more red 19c, actually very close to the violet of the 3c, die sunk on three-hole punched card measuring 137x178mm, from the Brooks collection though his name is no longer on the back of the card, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, tiny security punch hole in each denomination, a lovely trial color proof, very fine and choice; again this is listed in Scott as a normal die proof on both India and wove papers, but not as a trial color proof, however this was listed as a normal die proof in the Brooks sale and was called "previously unreported" (we have found no other reports since then), we are not sure how many more die proofs are in public hands, if any, nevertheless it is quite likely that this is the only trial color in public hands; R.L. Miller, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 566945 (1938); ex-Brooks. (Image) Est. 2,000-3,000

SOLD for $3,250.00

1418 P 821P1 image#821P1, 16c Black, large die proof on India, die sunk on full size card measuring 153x204mm, a lovely die proof with exceptionally clean and well preserved card, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reads "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, penciled at the bottom is "Arlt", the vignette engraver for this value, extremely fine and one of the few proofs that came out of the Bureau through this engraver, an exceedingly rare proof, and there is reason to believe that this is the listing example which last sold for about the current catalog price in 1988; most probably the only example in private hands; W.K. Schrage, designer; Carl T. Arlt, vignette engraver; control number 566946 (1938). (Image) $1,500.00

SOLD for $2,600.00

1419 P 825P1 image#825P1, 20c Bright blue green, large die proof on India, die sunk on three-hole punched card measuring 137x179mm, from the Brooks collection, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, with "Brooks" written in pencil at bottom, two tiny security punch holes in left "20" and one in the right, very clean and fresh, choice very fine; this is the only example of a die proof for this value in our records and it is certainly a very rare proof with at most only two die proofs of this value in collectors' hands, if that many; W. A. Roach, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 566796 (1938); ex-Brooks. (Image) $1,800.00

SOLD for $2,600.00

1420 TC 829TC1 image#829TC1, 25c William McKinley, large die trial color proof on India, in green, similar to the bright blue green of the 20c value, die sunk on full size card measuring 153x203mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reads "Engravers Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, also with "Sep. 30, 1938" handstamp at bottom, an exceptionally clean and attractive proof, extremely fine; this is a color proof over which no confusion can exist concerning whether it is an issued color die proof or a trial color, significantly there is no listing in Scott as a die proof, only the trial color, this supports our belief that for most of the 1938 Presidential series there is likely only one proof, or at most two, of each value that is known in public hands; it is our opinion that this is the only known 25c proof; V.S. McCloskey, designer; James R. Lowe, vignette engraver; control number 571922 (1938). (Image) $2,000.00
