1092 P 627P1 image#627P1, 2c Sesquicentennial Exposition, large die proof on India, from the John Eissler collection of proofs, cut down to slightly larger than a small die proof, measuring 47x32mm, also on original card backing, though this is not the usual card of this period being more yellowish, even the paper is a bit unusual in that it appears to be India and not the wove paper that was starting to be used by the Bureau at that this period, very fine; a most unusual and rare proof; John Eissler was a vignette engraver at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the proofs that were in his collection are large die proofs with the original blue control number removed and a black five-digit number applied (see appendix D at the end of the catalog for other Eissler die proofs), this is the only one that we are aware that has the number on the back of the design and is not on a large card; C.A. Southgate, characterized by not being card mounted and the control numbers applied to the front in the untrimmed non-die portion, fresh and very fine; because this is a Southgate proof it is not likely this was intended to be a different color than the issued color, but it is a very distinctive blue color; a rare large die proof being the only one issued in this format; C.A. Huston, designer; L.S. Schofield, vignette engraver; control number 362350 (1934); ex-Southgate. (Image) $1,000.00
